Questions on setting video quality & exporting speed inserts

Post by JonOrangeElise »

First off, I used HLT (Grand Prix edition) for the first time last week, and it basically worked flawlessly as far as capturing data for every session, triggering my GoPro 4 Silver, and connecting with Garmin GLO external GPS and OBDLink LX. The only hitch is that I ran out of GoPro battery on one session. I did a lot of testing/troubleshooting before the track day, and I recommend the same for everyone else -- especially if you are connecting three separate accessories. :D

My questions:

1) I did not use my Android phone as a camera (it covers up too much of my small Lotus windshield). Instead I used the GoPro as my only camera. When using this GoPro video for HLT overlays, the resulting file's frame rate is reported as only 13 fps in Windows Properties (and, yes, it looks like 13 fps). The resulting file is 2:21 min/sec, 1080p, and only 67 MB. QUESTION: Is there a way to change export settings in HLT to create much higher frame rate files (like 30 fps)?

2) I also use RaceRender 3 to create my own custom gauges and data layout for overlays. I understand this question may be better directed to RaceRender, but do you know of any way to get HLT's speed insert data into RaceRender videos? Does it export into any particular fields on the CSV export?

3) Speaking of speed inserts, how exactly are these reported? I understand the speed insert overlays are drawn from POI triggers, but what exactly does it mean when the video says, for example, "Straight 104 mph" -- is this the speed achieved precisely at a POI signifying the end of a straight, OR is it the top speed between two POIs? Likewise, "Corner 90 mph" -- is this the speed achieved precisely at a POI signifying a corner apex, or is it calculated by some other method?

Thanks much. To think that 10 years ago, I spent almost $1,000 on a DL1 data box, which provided less data. :o

Hi,

For Android, there are two overlaying options available now. One is the software based method and one is the new hardware based method. The later is available for Android 5.1 and later only. In case you are using the software based method, there is a setting on overlay quality available in LapTimer's Expert Settings (Video Tweaks). Make sure it is in the highest position. For the hardware method, quality cannot be selected.

Whenever the frame rate doesn't match the input frame rate, there is a problem with the decoder / encoder and the file format. Combinations for external cams and Android phones are huge. So the only thing I can recommend is to vary settings and video formats.

For further analysis, please post your Android device type and Android version, as well as the precise HERO video format used.

Speed inserts are a LapTimer speciality. I haven't seen them for other overlayers so far although I assume they will be copied at some point in time (like everything else ;-) ). Speeds inserts are not related to POIs but calculated. They are min (corner) and max (straight) speeds achieved in the regular min / max speed change on tracks.

Is there a way to export the speed inserts (corner speed and straights) along with lap data? Would be interested in comparing data across laps to see highest values and level of consistency.

Thanks!

No, but this can be analyzed from the speed channel included in all exports.
