Lap Timer Newbie, need advice on functionality

Post by paradiss »

I just purchased the petrol head edition, for the purposes of making video overlays. I attempted to record a video and noticed it had a very bad frame rate and shuddering, and the overlay was de-synced.

My usage intentions, just daily driving, as I have no plans to visit a track and do 'laps'. I just need the app to record from Point A when I hit start, til Point B, when i stop the recording. Is this the right app for me, as messing around with it for an hour and I only see how to record laps with designated start/stop points.

Hardware:
Nexus 6
OBDLink MX (Blutooth)

I also tried using a GoPro, but could not find a proper way to export a data log to sync with a video.

I would rather stay with Harrys Lap Timer for simplicity sake.

Any assistance or advice would be appreciated!

Please turn on "Manual Timing" in LapTimer ‣ Administration ‣ Settings. This will add Go and Stop buttons in several places. For ad hoc recordings, I'd suggest to use Video View. To get there use LapTimer ‣ Race ‣ Timer ‣ Video ‣ select internal cam ‣ Preview. Press the large Go and Stop buttons as required.

You will find you "laps" and videos in LapTimer ‣ Analysis ‣ Lap List afterwards. Select any lap and press the Play button directly below the Video Preview to watch video with overlays instantly. In case you see problem with frame rates here, please check if you have any disturbing background process active. I have tried 4K UHD recordings for the Nexus 6 and need to say that I have not been impressed. It seem the device formally supports this resolution, but has implemented it on the absolute edge of feasibility. So it is very sensible. Try switching to FullHD (touch the SD/HD/FullHD/UHD button in Video View) to change resolution. LapTimer will memorize your setting.

Thank you so much for fast and super detailed reply, your customer interaction is top notch!

With your explanation, I noticed that the app does exactly what I need. Manual start and stop, is perfect.

Now i encountered and issue when exporting the video's, once the video is at 100% the app crashes, and the video does not get saved. I verified I have enough space. This is quite strange, as it worked last night when I did a 4k Video, these ones I am trying were both 1080 and 720.

I assume you updated to LapTimer v20 the last night and use hardware accelerated overlaying instead of the old software based process now. I have received some crash logs and work on a solution. In case you want to work around this issue currently, force the use of the old process for now: LapTimer ‣ Administration ‣ Settings ‣ Expert Settings ‣ Video Tweaks ‣ Force Software Encoding.
