Simple and straightforward question here:
Can I use HLT on my Samsung Note 3 as a 100% stand-alone device to display my current speed and record my lap times?
No GPS puck, no additional data recorder, no special wiring or complex computer interface?
I run at VIR, I am headed to Road Atlanta and Atlanta Motorsports this spring and do SCCA hillclimb events.
That is it.
I don't need or want OBD feedback, complex data, lap overlays, synced video, etc. etc. etc...
If the answer is, "No" then please explain.

Yes, the Note3 should be fine for stand alone operation. Internal GPSes deliver 1 position a second only. This is the reason data analytics are limited without an external GPS (coming at 5, 10, or more Hz). As long as you mount the Note 3 in a position you get a good GPS reception (center of windscreen), timing accuracy will be fine as LapTimer interpolates the 1 Hz position stream to derive timing at 0.1 to 0.05s accuracy. As this is your focus - fine.
The only equipment you actually need for the Note 3 is a mount and an in car power supply. It works without power supply too, but chances are good your batteries are drained when it is getting most interesting.
