I think this will all work well; only concern is securing the GPS so it doesn't come off or get too banged up in a crash. Anyone have any advice for that?

With Harry's advice, I've mounted my iPhone and external GPS as per the attached pix. For the iPhone, I plan to upgrade to a new phone and keep this iPhone 5 as a dedicated lap timer. For the GPS unit, I drilled holes in the rubber mount and tail of the bike and secured with a zip tie. (All products purchased through the links on Harry's site).
