iPhone 4 Bluetooth Optimization Question: MultiCam and OBD2

Post by jmciver »

I tested my iPhone 4 running HLT GP using the MultiCam functionality with my GoPro and an iPad 3, while also using a Bluetooth OBD2 device. I was able to link and overlay all of the videos together with the OBD data (GoPro as primary video with the iPad and iPhone providing the picture-in-picture video). I noticed that during the test recording (about 2 minutes long), the bluetooth OBD data would sometimes freeze (the OBD data streams fine when not using the MultiCam functionality with the iPad).

I know that the MultiCam feature uses bluetooth between the iPhone (running HLT GP) and the iPad (running the MultiCam app). I also know that more than one BT device can communicate with the iPhone at the same time (which happened). I looked in the expert settings and noticed some tweaks for BT. There are also some tweaks for OBD2 as well. Before I start experimenting "in the blind" with these different parameters, can somebody provide me with some initial "optimal" settings to maximize BT OBD data reliability while using the BT MultiCam functionality (the GoPro should not be an issue since it uses WiFi)? I don't need to have all of the OBD PIDs, just the ones that are needed for the overlay to function properly (i.e. speed, RPM, throttle, etc).

Thanks!

The drop out of OBD is due to the processing power of your iPhone4 (one processor core only). It can't keep track of the OBD communication while video is on. LapTimer's BT access is optimized to work with MultiCam/GPS/OBD, but you need a 5 or later for this. Consider using the iPad as the master?

Thanks for the response!

I figured there might be a hardware limitation with the iPhone 4 now that HLT GP is very "feature rich" compared to when I first started using HLT on my iPhone 4 a few years ago. I guess I am surprised it worked at all given the age of the iPhone 4 hardware.

As you mentioned (and as I mentioned in another thread), I think I will put my iPad 3 to good use as the master since it has a much better processor and the iPhone 4 is a more than capable MultiCam candidate along with my new GoPro (and since I have it anyway).
