a background refresh for iOS would be great! In that case motorcyclists like me can just put their phones in their jackets, buddyseat of tankbag and do timed laps. Thank you.

This is not feasible in iOS - at least not without reducing data richness and accuracy. Please do not put the device in your jackets anyway - that's dangerous in case you crash. Add the phone to a stable mount in front of you. That's safe and allows you do check function.
