Accuracy question

Post by Metalystic »

I race a dirt track modified on oval tracks and I want to use this for timing my laps as I race. Tracks are generally 1/4 - 3/8 mile and lap times are from 14-20 seconds. They also score our laps electrically using MyLaps.com but you don't get those until the next day. Im am wondering about the 1HZ refresh rate and how that would time laps within .1 seconds. I read somewhere that it would use your rate of speed when you cross the finish line to calculate the end of the lap since you may be half way between refresh cycles. I don't even know if Im making any sense but mainly just want to know if this app will work for this. I would want times accurate to within .1 or .05 if possible.

Also, is there a way to mount the GPS sensor somewhere on the outside of the car and put the phone in my pocket? Then I would just run an ear bud under my race suit to hear lap times.

any help is much appreciated and your APP seems really cool, I've already been testing it around the block. lol

Thank you,

Justin

Harry,

Thanks for the quick response. I have an Android Galaxy note III so would that mean that I should see .05 second accuracy? What is NWEA? Is this a setting I have to make sure I select or will it do it automatically if I have a clear view of the sky? Also, can you provide some insite as to an external antenna I can mount on the outside of the car for a better signal so I can have the phone in my pocket or in the dash?

Thanks again,

Justin

Sorry, forgot the external GPS (external antennas cannot be connected to smartphone GPSes)... Please check http://www.gps-laptimer.de/Compatibility_Android.html for compatible options. To improve accuracy, you may place one of the external BT GPSes to your roof. Only the (expensive) VBOX Sport can be placed in the car with an external antenna outside. External GPSes are mostly sensible enough to be placed behind the windscreen however.

I really do not have all Android smartphones available ;-) but I would assume the Galaxy Note III allows access to the original GPS data (NMEA). In case you want to dig deeper into the topic, check http://www.gps-laptimer.de/GPS_and_Accuracy.html

You will find tons of other information on http://www.gps-laptimer.de and by using the search function here on the forum.

Yes, when I start Laptimer it says it is accessing NMEA interface. If that will be accurate to .05 seconds I could get away with that but I may just spend the extra and get the XGPD160 if you think that will make it more consistent and accurate. I notice when I click on GPS the accuracy is like 30 feet. This makes me think I may need the additional attachment. I cant wait to try this thing. We have about 4 months until race season though. Im trying to get this all figured out ahead of time so Im not messing with it on raceday.

Is there a video option for android or just the Iphone? I normally run a go pro when I race.

LapTimer Petrolhead will be available in March for Android. The XGPS160 is clearly better than any Internal GPS.
