Issues with Video Overlay using PLX Kiwi2

Post by chneo1982 »

I am using XGPS160 and PLX kiwi2 wifi.

See my video overlay:

I understand my speed is based on OBD data. But it is stuck at max 141kph. Why is this so? Is the only way to display GPS speed instead of OBD by deselecting OBD when creating overlay? But that would remove the throttle and rpm as well right?

The PLX wifi connection seems unstable and intermittent at times. Any way to improve the connection? Is the GoPoint BT1 connection better?

Appreciate your advice. Thanks!

Hi,

Looking into the data is looks like there is a problem with the speed sensor... As the rest of the OBD data continuous to change, it seems speed is just not reported any higher that 141. You may export your data to .hlptrl (one lap only please) and send it to me for testing. Actually, there is no option to select GPS speed while the OBD gauges are still visible. The only option you have here is replacing all the OBD speeds by GPS speed in a .hlptrl export and reimport it again. Not a convenient way, but one that is possible.

There are tons of discussions with wifi dongles on the net (including the PLX forum). It seems it is a general issue with some iPhone / ad hoc wifi chips. Please check the PLX forum and ask them for help.

Last comment: I'd recommend a stable mount which will give you much better video recordings :-) You can find a recommendation on www.gps-laptimer.de/Compatibility.html

Hi Harry,

Thanks for the reply!

I just did a datalog from OBD using my ECU tuning kit. Yes you are right the problem is at OBD source. I changed my transmisson final drive gear and it caused the VSS to have some weird readings. Even the current gear number is screwed for gear 5 and 6.

Any possibility to add option to select GPS speed or OBD speed for overlay in future updates? That would be great for people like me using XGPS.

I will try GoPoint BT1 to see if connection stability is better than PLX.

As for the mount, i am already using the RAM mount. It still shakes like mad.

Mount: please make sure you have exactly the one I recommend (compatibility pages on www.gps-laptimer.de). The composite ones shake, the recommended one doesn't usually.

The GPS speed display Is on my list but not yet scheduled.

The XGrip is fine as long as you use metal mount... Is your windscreen very shaky, anything special about the car vibrations? Finally, which iPhone generation do you use?

I am using iphone 5.

Windscreen is stable. Maybe my car suspension is too hard.

Strange, this is like an iPhone5 with that exact mount usually looks like:

Looking at the front of the car you can see the video stabilizer working very nice by the way.

wow that video overlay looks great!

Well the car and track is totally different. Mine is just a cheap Japanese car and that is a 911GTS. Track surface of the ring is definitely better than the one i went, johor circuit's pretty run down......

Ya was about to ask u is there any setting for video stablizing? i tot it is an inherent function in iphone 5?
