[SOLVED] Inaccurate speed

Post by Newf »

I was previously using the laptimer with my ER6n track bike and the indicated speed seemed to be correct, but i've recently started using it with my 2005 GSXR1000 track bike and the top speed should be ready alot higher but are showing about the same or lower. I haven't been calibrating but this didn't seem to cause a problem on the slower bike. Is not calibrating the reason i'm not showing accurate speeds or is there someother settings that need to be changed? Update rate??

Thanks
Colin

The calibration is only for the g-meter, speed is measured by the GPS signal. Either your mounting position on the new bike has lower GPS reception or the bike is definetely slower ;-) Update rate can't be changed and has a max of 1 Hz with the internal sensor. If you want higher update rates you'll have to use some external GPS toghether with a jailbroken device or wait for one of the announced "official" solutions without jailbreak.

I had some reports on speeds shown too low. As LapTimer actually only stores the numbers received from the GPS sensor, I doubt it is an issue with the software. Not of great help for the issue, I know... I will further monitor.

The bike is definitely faster, i'll play with my mounting point the next time at the track as it was a little obstructed by the front fairing/windshield on GSXR and the ER6n is a naked bike, so its completely open. The average speed is ok, but i'm guessing this is a calculated number.

Average speed is calculated from overall distance and time.

Did some test at the track today with another app (Diablo Biker from Pirelli) to see what top speeds it would show compared to bike Speedo & Harry's laptimer app. When i was running Harry's laptimer app i was seeing top speed of around 115km/hr & 140km/hr (2 of the longest straights on the tight 2.4km track). When using the Diablo Biker it's recording 160km/hr & 167km/hr which i think is what my actual speed is. I was using my road bike (08 CBR1000rr) today so i could take a quick glimse at the speedo (+/-10% speedo error) and noticed it was ready about +/-170km/hr & +/-180km/hr. This indicates to me that my Iphone 4 GPS is updating quick enough but the Harry's laptimer software is not showing me accurate speeds.

Any suggestions?

Hi,

So far I have no idea what's going on, lets try to track this down...

Firstly, what is your configuration? I understand you have an iPhone4, any external GPS used? What is your 'Units' setting in LapTimer's Setting? System Default / Metric / Imperial.

Secondly, please collect some data for me: Turn on Logging as follows: Goto Settings -> Expert Settings -> Collect Trace Log -> On. Send HLTR to background using the Home button. Pull it forward again by tapping on HLTR (you should see a small recording symbol in the bottom of the page). Record a lap with wrong speed displays / recordings. Send HLTR to background and pull forward again -> you will receive a mail prepared for sending, send it to me. In addition, export the lap recorded to CSV and KML and send it to me too.

Sorry for any inconvenience, hope we get it that way.

P.S. I used LapTimer to measure speeds over 300 km/h so there is no general limitation. :D

Should be back at the track this weekend, will try and get the file for you.

Just using the Iphone4 alone on Default settings

same Problem here. Iphone 4, hlt 13.4, internal GPS, good receiving conditions, allways green indicated.

no problem on daily driving with smooth speed changes.

but on hard acceleration and braking it failed to catch up to the actual speed.

we are doin a lot of performance testing, using the Performance Box.
My intention is to document this with Hlt and an overlayed vid. But the Result is very disappointing.
We have done a lot of serious hard pulls .. making 5.x 100-200 and 10.x 200-300..
on the vid you see the street zooming in, hear the engine stepping through revs and gears as lightning, the PB is showing the real numbers...and on the overlayed Vid the speed is like frozen a second or 2. Then a burst of rapid upward counting..and frozen again. After passing 300 the hard braking...and hlt the same behavior the other way...it never comes even close to the real world.
if that is helpfull, i have "Laps" and Vids, showing this.

it looks like some task in the iphone is stepping in, disturbing hlts realtime calculation routine..
maybee an prioritising problem in the ios?

i've tried to rule out some other user apps...like whatsapp and skype...but even if i stop all of them, it dosen't matter

I did some testing and analysis during the last days. It is probably Apple's implementation of the location service that tries to smooth positions and speed... I was not really able to reproduce (no chance to get to track), but received a log from a one of you that shows that the (too low) speed shown is exactly what is coming in. LapTimer does not change this speed data at all. I'm currently adding an expert setting to switch between measured and calculated speed. Measured speed (Doppler effect) is usually the better value, however, as the effect described here kills this accuracy, calculating speed is probably the better one again. I will try to include it in v14. In case anyone had the same effect with an external GPS with direct NMEA access (TomTom, G-FI) - please let me know.
