Manual vs automatic video recording for autocross

Post by gplracerx »

Harry,

I tried your suggestion to use the manual start for video recording so as not to lose the actual start. It didn't work very well. It appeared to start the timer too, as when I finished the run, I had two laps recorded, one very short one and one with the correct lap time. Unless I'm doing something wrong, it appears that touching the manual record red button starts the timer as well. Then when you cross the Go line, it thinks you have finished that lap and are starting another one. The second problem is that I had difficulty in stopping the video recording. Touching the red button in the upper left of the screen did nothing. Touching the X symbol in the upper right just put recording in the background. The only way I could get video recording to stop was to put the phone back into portrait orientation. Then I got an error message that video recording had stopped unexpectedly. When I tried a second time, the video was only linked to the short time in the staging area and not to the actual run. There was something that looked sort of like a button in the center of the screen that said something like auto start video recording. Was that what I should have touched?

Then there's maintaining a connection to the GPS, but that seems to be an iOS issue as it affects the Dual status app as well as HLT. What happens is that the update rate goes to zero even though the Bluetooth led on the XGPS160 is lit and it shows 'connected' in the Bluetooth settings on the iOS Settings menu. The Dual status app can't find it either. The best workaround I've found is to turn off the XGPS160 and forget the device in settings, then turn it back on and re-pair. Most of the time that seems to work without a full reboot. PITA.

The 2 laps (one short and one regular) is expected behavior. I plan to automatically move manual recordings stopped automatically by a trigger to a "Incomplete" track in a future version. To keep manual recording capabilities, it is necessary to start both GPS and video recording when pressing the record button in Video View. For the time being, please just delete this first short lap.

On stopping the video: this is probably a bug. I used LapTimer with manual operation turned on in LapTimer Settings. This replaces the small button by a big one that should work and stop the video. I will check the small one.

For my second run, there was no video linked to the run, only to the short 'lap'. I was able to find the video, but had to go through the syncing process with it. At that point, I quit trying.

Yes, I've read that. I assume there is another issue with lap linking that occurs in special situations like this.
