Google Earth/KML files

Post by atxguy »

After the first time i used the lap timer with Iphone4s using internal GPS sensor i was able to open my laps in Google earth. The files were 267KB in size. For my next track day I used a Dual XGPS150 sensor. When i tried to open those laps in Google earth they would not open, and the files were only about 103KB.
Any Help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Please export again, maybe the transfer corrupted the file. The size depends on the overall number of fixes stored for the lap. Both length and update rate influence that.

I have tried exporting again a few times with the same results. I went back to my first day sessions and exported them again and they still worked but the new ones don't. With the internal GPS i was getting about 102 fixes per lap with the XGPS i was getting about 490. I will try doing a few laps with the internal sensor next time i go to the track to see if those laps will work, but that would just defeat the purpose of having an external sensor. Thanks for the quick reply!

I think I know what the problem is. Due to the size of the additional fixes, the KML file is getting pretty large and LapTimer compresses it. Please check your exports again: the export for the 1 Hz lap will have a .kml extension, while the export for the XGPS / 5 Hz lap comes with a .kml.gz extension. To open that file in Google Earth, you need uncompress it first. Use gunzip or any compatible unpacker.

Here is the lap you sent to me:

Thank you so much! Also I am loving the lap timer! I have taken over 3 seconds a lap of my time since using the app and found riding against the clock to be more rewarding than against other riders!

I have been trying to find a program to unzip the files to something Google earth can open but have been unsuccessful. I am able to unzip the file with but they don't open with Google earth. I'm not really a computer guy :(

Just googled for "gunzip Windows" and found e.g. http://www.7-zip.org
Using this application, uncompress the .kml.gz file to .kml
Open that .kml file in Google Earth.
