Currently, this kind of "background video recording" is not supported. I plan to have that feature available in version 17.5 (Autumn 2013).

Isn't this possible with use of multicam or GoPro as external camera? Or is the use of a GoPro only possible when the iPhone is also recording?

Yes, MultiCam is active only while LapTimer's Video View is active.
