BMW vrs GoPoint BT1

Yes it is. My conversations with them indicated they were working on a fix for their product, the BT1, so that it would communicate with the S54 in an M3. I have a number of videos on the track with your excellent lap timer, but it would be even better with the data from the OBD II sensor on the screen.

I eagerly await a solution.

Please try the following setting - just verified with a 2007 E92 (335i):

This turns off requests for 3 PIDs that were not answered by the above car... LapTimer initially requests available PIDs and requests only these afterwards. In case it requests one of this "valid" PIDs and no answer / error message is received, it resets the parser and starts over. This in turn means cars reporting wrong (poor OBD implementation) will fail to work with LapTimer as long as the respective PIDs are not excluded manually.

Please let us know if this fixes the problem for your car.

I returned my BT1 to the manufacturer under the warranty period. Regrettably, they could not offer me a definitive time to solve the S54 conflict. Rather than be stuck with a >$100 paper weight, I sent it back to them. However, if you can get verification from another user with the S54 that this solution works, I will happily purchase another BT1.

I read the latest update on my Iphone that there have been improvements on the M3 interaction. I cannot find more details on your site and I am hoping you can elaborate on the M3 specific improvements. Does the interface with the BT1 now work properly? I think this was their problem and not yours but I am interested in knowing if you have a fix.

If so, I will purchase another BT1 and get it going.

By the way, our local chapter of the BMWCCA (San Diego) and the PCA (Zone 8) held a data gathering tech session. It was put on by one of our local experts and your product was prominently featured. For just a few dollars, your product has a capability that typically exceeds stand alone units that cost many times more. As you know, I have posted my own Youtube channel using your product exclusively (trackmfour). In addition, I really like how you are constantly improving your lap timer.

I have my new BT1 device and set up the screen on Harry's Lap Timer as you said. The device has been plugged into my OBDII port on my S54 M3. Regrettably, the device is not recognized by my phone bluetooth. I haven't tried it on my MB to verify the device but it does not link in my bluetooth nor when I open the BT1 program. Here are my settings in Harry's Lap Timer.

In case you cannot connect on BT level (i.e. see the device in iOS ‣ Settings ‣ Bluetooth ‣ Devices, and pair it successfully), no app will be able to access it. For the GoPoint BT1 no OBD settings is required, it is all prepared to connect automatically (when connected on BT level - see above).

Sorry to say but it seems there is either a second problem with the BT dongle, or an issue with your iPhone? Please contact GoPoint's support and let me know if you can't work it out.

Harry, first I am new to the forums but a longtime user and recent upgrader to the Grand Prix Edition. Thank you for a great product and fun track day monitor. My last track day I was still waiting for my BT1 and I wish I did some more reading about it and the M3 S54 but it arrived today, after track day.
I have been following this thread and hoping for some good news. Before implementing the PID fix above let me define the hardware / software so we are talking about the same thing.

Hardware:
iPhone 5 running iOS 6.1.4
GoPoint BT1 / Model number 9105 / Hardware revision 1.0.0 / Firmware Revision 177.0.5
2004.5 M3 Coupe (Canadian Spec Vehicle) / S54 Engine.
2007 A4 Avant (Canadian Spec Vehicle)

Software:
GoPoint 1.0.6
Harry's Lap Timer 17.0.6 (GP Edition)

OK I have been through several scenarios and will outline them.

Scenario 1: BT1 with E46M3
Got the BT1 primarily for the M3 so tried there first. Followed quick start instructions to a tee.
Restarted iPhone with home / power button press and hold
Then plugged BT1 into OBD port and started car.
Heard the tone just like the first time (and every 30 seconds or so thereafter) with solid red and flashing blue lights
Then went into Bluetooth settings on phone to try to pair. Had a lot of difficulty even finding the GoPoint module while bluetooth searched (I have paired this phone with at least 3 cars, one headset, my iPad, and have had no trouble pairing in general).
Could not pair
"Forget This Device" for all bluetooth pairings, and tried phone reset -> Plug in BT1 -> Power on
Device did the same thing.
Could not pair

Sounded like at this point the phone was having trouble pairing with the BT1.
To verify I re-paired it to the BMW Bluetooth module and had no problem at all doing so. So verified phone was working / could pair.


Scenario 2: BT1 with Audi A4 Avant
Got home and plugged the BT1 into OBD port of Audi A4 Avant, started car and attempted to pair
Heard the tone, solid red and flashing blue lights on BT1, and the phone was able to pair with the BT1.
Now at this point I was able to download the following apps:
ReadyLINK
GoPoint
mpgLINK
BT1
all from app store.
Was able to get the above BT1 information (software and hardware versions etc) from the GoPoint app
HLT was able to give me realtime RPM. I had it in Easy Mode unfortunately and forgot how to change it back until I got back into the house and started hunting around for posts.
Now that the BT1 was paired with my iPhone I decided to try it again in the M3

Scenario 3: BT1 with E46M3 (attempt #2)
Plugged BT1 into OBD port and the same thing happened with the lights on it.
Now, however, the iPhone showed that it was connected to the BT1 (good news)
When I attempted to run any of the GoPoint apps, it would connect for about 30 seconds, and then the app would crash as the BT1 chimed its tone. (bad news)

So I think the E46M3 is causing the BT1 to connect and disconnect from the phone at regular intervals.
This did not happen in the Audi.

My bad, HLT was in easy mode at that time so I could not access sensor data.
I have not had a chance to go back to the car with the PID exclusion as above.

What I learned (tl;dr)
1. GoPoint BT1 module that I have is functional
2. Bluetooth on iPhone 5 / iOS 6.1.4 is able to pair with the BT1. Just not in my M3 initially, or after paired in another vehicle, is intermittent

I have yet to email tech support to see if / how to upgrade firmware or whether this legendary update exists.

I will report back to the forum when I have a chance to do so with my results.

[EDIT: Tried it out again on M3]
Sad to say, but despite the PID exclusions (and tried again eliminating them) it did not work.
Also, on HLT it looks as if on SENSORS, the BT1 is recognized. Then it disappears. Then it is recognized. etc.
So I think the BT link is intermittent and it is the BT1 that appears to be "hanging up" on the phone, not vice versa.

Hopefully there will be a solution. I am about to email GoPoint tech support about this with the results above.
