Not enough memory to overlay

Post by tulloch »

I've got a video of a "lap" which is a bit longer than I intended, 98 minutes to be precise. When I attempt to overlay there is a message "Master Video ok, overlay data available, low memory (6.7 GB missing) and the overlay will not start.

ITunes shows apps using 12.39 GB, Other using 13.3 GB with 31.42 free.
The phone shows HLT using 11.8 GB.

Deleting all the apps is not going to free up 6.7 GB as HLT is using most of the app memory. Is there any way to get the overlay to run or, failing that, to export the raw video to the photo album to get it off the device?

The only way to get the raw video (which is part of the 11.8 GB claimed by LapTimer) to your desktop is using iExplorer (available here in the forum in thread "How to send databases to Harry"). You may try cutting off some of the end of the video and transfer it back afterwards (same name and location). You must not cut from the beginning as this will void any sync information between the laps and the video.

Thanks Harry, I'm familiar with iExplore, should have realised I can get to it that way. 12 gig seems too small for such a long video yet the device had not run out of memory. The amount of free memory would have been about 8 gig less during recording as I deleted an old video after the drive and 30 gig free seems plenty to process 12 a 12 gig video but obviously not. Can you give me some guidelines re maximum video size? I have had 70 minutes before with no problem.

Thanks. From that a 98 minutes video would require around 18 gig. The video seems to be around 12 but all the data is there for the entire drive. I've got 30 gig free memory, is that not enough to overlay a 12 gig video? I know we need at least the same again to copy to the photo album but we have that.

That depends on your lap's length. In case the whole video is one lap, you need 12 GB for the overlaid video plus 12 GB temporarily to copy to the Photo library, plus some contingency. This will be around 25 GB. That should actually work with 30 GB free... Are your sure the 12 GB and the 30 GB are correct?

Just about to install iExplore and see what that reveals.

LapTimer's Video List shows all videos and their size.

Well the raw video is a bit over 12 gig. Not the biggest one I've made but certainly the longest at 1:38. Next down is 1:21 but that is overlaid and is nearly 15 gig. I don't have the raw version to compare size. So no video or data has been lost so we did not run out of memory when recording and seem to have more than enough free memory to overlay. Could it be a bug in the routine that calculates the space required for the overlay?

I checked the formula again. It takes the number of seconds to be overlaid and multiplies it be the formats bitrate (actually it checks the master videos's video format, and applies the standard bitrate for that format). The resulting value is multiplied by 2 (overlay plus temporary space for transfer to the Photo library) and 20% contingency is added (which proofed to be a good value for normal lap length, but is probably too much for very long laps).

So to verify the math, what exact values do you have? What is the number of seconds your lap is long (not the video), and how much intro / extro time do you add in Overlay Configuration. And what resolution is your video? Is it HD or FullHD?
