Use volume up/down to trigger video start/stop

Post by subawang »

Similar to how the + volume button allows pics/vids to be taken in the built-in camera app, I would like to be able to use the +(or -) button to be used to start and stop video recording when in video mode. The reason why I would like this, is when I mount the iphone on my headrest mount and want to just record video in 720p, and cannot trust the gps to pick up a signal.

Thanks for a great product!

Got this requests several times already (including on this Forum ;-) ). Problem is there is no officially supported approach to detect a volume button press from a 3rd party app. Apple uses it for their cam app, but hey, they are Apple :-)

Funny how different user's approaches are sometimes. From the first day I thought that this was one key feature of HLT: not having to touch it al all ;-) Have you thought of getting an XGPS150? That way you should be able to mount your phone basically everywhere in your car. I'm pretty happy with mine and it's good value for money.

Harry, not to say that you are wrong, but it appears that for the app "video camera+", they do use the volume buttons to trigger recording. Maybe the developer for that app can shed some light?

Danke schoen!

One can poll volume changes and make a judgement if it is a 'click' - but that's exactly what I meant by "it is no officially supported". Apple has rejected app submissions using this feature. Reason is clear - in case they change hardware buttons later (e.g. add an explicit trigger), apps doing the above interpretation will behave "strange". That's all pretty sophisticated, but understandable - Apple takes care things are simple and inline with what users expect. :-)

Yeah, I understand (but don't necessarily agree with apple's) view. Thanks for your time to respond.

I just noticed that with the new update for the app "camera awesome", that they report that "return of the volume shutter button". Maybe you can quickly revisit the topic with apple, as they are obviously allowing apps to use the volume trigger.

And just to note, apple hasn't changed the number or function of the hardware buttons since the iphone was introduced . . .just saying ;)
