[SOLVED] V16 Crashing When Switching Camera Modes & ...

Post by jmciver »

Just wanted to report a few issues I was having with v16:

1. I mount my iPhone to my roll bar, which is behind me (between the driver and passenger seat). As such, when I have the phone in the mounting cradle, I have to use the rear-facing camera and not the forward facing camera, so that I have access to the phone controls from my seat. There is a button for this in HLT that allows you to switch between the two cameras (I used it without issue in v15 of HLT), however, when I press that button with v16, HLT crashes. I found that the only way to prevent HLT from crashing was to close HLT, open the iPhone Camera App, switch camera modes in that app, then re-open HLT.

2. Throttle position still not responsive. In my case it is for a 2005 BMW M3. I tried the different settings that are now available. I have very sporadic results with one option (which was hardly any response at all), and no response at all from any of the other options. The way I conducted my test was simply connecting to HLT with the car at idle, and then bliping the throttle to see if there were a response. All other OBD functions work fine. If there is some other way to execute the new throttle position tweaks that I am missing, please let me know.

V16 Crashing When Switching Camera Modes & Throttle Position

I could reproduce #1 and will fix it in the next bugfix release. #2 seems to be really difficult. Please try throttle D and do not forget to disconnect / connect the OBD after having changed the setting.

Update on #1: this happens if a custom video resolution is set in LapTimer's preferences. So as an alternative work around (instead using the Video app), set this to "Best Available - High".

V16 Crashing When Switching Camera Modes & Throttle Position

Post by jmciver »

Ok, I tried all of the different PIDs for throttle indication. Each time I completely closed out both HLT and my Bluetooth OBD interface app. None worked except for the "default" setting. However it was very, very sporadic. I could blip the throttle several times in the course of 5-10 seconds, for example, and the throttle position value might change once or twice and "hang up" between blips.

Conversely, if I connect HLT to my Ford Expedition, the throttle response is as expected. As I said before, all other OBD functions appear to work normally.

BMW's implementation seems to be a mess, really. Don't ask how much traffic I had on this topic already...

So has there been any more progress with the BMW TPS implementation or is it pretty much a lost cause?

I understood the alternative throttle PIDs worked for some BMW drivers... I'm not the person to investigate further here - spend far to much time on this already. In case someone has more insights and can give me a hint, I will try to support. Other BMW drivers? What's your experience with the alternative PIDs?
