Data Management.

Post by hms »

Currently, I have downloaded all my laps to Dropbox and deleted the laps on the iphone. Also I have dissassociated the iphone with Dropbox so it doesn't resynch the laps back.
I am going to Bedford Autodrome on Saturday, and will be using v15 beta, with an XGPS150 updated with tho 5hz, hopefully to record video (set to medium resolution) and data. I will expect to have a phone signal but no wifi access at Bedford. (Draughty old airfield in the middle of nowhere!)
I expect to generate a lot of data and video, and I imagine that I will fill the memory of the phone before the end of day.
My plan is to take my ipad (I also have the ipad version of HLT) and send the data across to that, then delete the files off the phone and start atgain.
Questions
1. Does the transfer between iphone and ipad also transfer across the video associated with the lap data?
2. If video is not transferred across devices, how do I do that within the limitations of no wifi? (I think phone signal would be too slow and data too large)

For others without an ipad, how would you manage your data?

Given you have purged all recordings in the beginning, LapTimer will allow approximately 3.6 hours of continuous data recording (for 5 Hz GPS, for 1 Hz it is 18 hours). Limitation is the number of data records which is still at 64k for the current beta. Memory / space will not be a real issue here. For Full HD video (iPhone4S, bitrate 24.2Mb/s), you will require approximately 180MB per minute, which sums up to 40GB for the 3.6 hours above. Using HD (iPhone4, 10.5Mb/s), 3.6 hours require 18GB.

Transfer between iPhone and iPad is not very fast, and limited to the data recording. Transferring the video data is no option from my point if view - this is simply too slow / too much. In case you cannot make 40GB / 18GB available on your iPhone, you need to carry a laptop for USB connection around.

My personal recommendation is to not fully go for video recording. You miss a lot of fun and track focus with fiddling around with video all the time. My suggestion would be to train first half of the day using standard data / time recording and then video record a session only. This gives you enough time for a great video, and is optimized in terms of line driven etc. Just my 2 cents, priorities may be different for you.

Harry
Thanks for the prompt and full reply.
Yes you are probably right to datalog the am and then certain laps through the pm.
I will have the bullet cam to record everything else in case I decide to go agricultural!
Have to keep my fingers crossed that I get the flying lap on HLT, not the rubbish laps!
