Can I transfer Laptimer to a new ipad...

without having to buy another copy? If so (or even if not), how do I transfer my stored laps to the new device? Thanks.

OK, I successfully downloaded the Laptimer App from the App store, including the upgrade to the Grand Prix edition, and I also copied the local tracks. But now I have an incredibly stupid question about the procedure to transfer the data recordings, which in my case consists of a total of exactly 100 laps. I'm unclear as to which email address I'm to use. In the instructions, it says to mail this information to myself. I initially thought this meant mailing it to the email address I use on my desktop computer, but reading further, it says, "To restore data recordings, open the mail generated during backup on the phone you want to restore the data to. Touch the .hlptrl/.hlptrz attachment and select LapTimer as the app to open it with." This sounds like the data on the current ipad needs to be emailed to an address used by the new ipad. Is this correct?

Just to see what would happen (since I don't know the email my daughter was using on the ipad mini she has given me - I just left her a message asking for it), I tried emailing it to my desktop about 20 minutes ago, and strangely, it hasn't arrived in my inbox yet. I know it's a large file, but I wouldn't expect it to take this long. Thanks.

You need to send it to an email which can be opened on the target device.

As usual, I've spent many frustrating hours and have gotten nowhere. Also as usual, my problems have nothing to do with Harry's Laptimer, so I'm just reaching out to you for advice to hopefully save me a trip to the Apple store for a session to figure out what the @#@#!#%# is wrong, as I'm at my wits end googling the various errors I keep getting.

The ipad my daughter gave me doesn't have an email account set up on it, so I tried to create a gmail account, thinking this is probably the most common, generic type of email (though this may end up being the source of my problem). I went through all the steps, and near the end, I got a message saying, "Cannot connect using SSL." So I google that, and was told that I need to enable IMAP and POP within my gmail account, so I did that, and then tried emailing my lap sessions to my new gmail account, but am getting an error message on my new ipad mini that says, "Cannot Get Mail. The mail server mail.gmail.com is not responding. Verify that you have entered the correct account info in Mail settings." Any idea what this means? Or, alternatively, is there is different type of account that works more seamlessly with iOS? I have an Outlook account on my desktop that I have used for years, but when I select Outlook as the account type it asks for a password, which I don't know, and when I select "forgot password", and enter my email address, it doesn't recognize it! Also, given Yahoo's recent securityh issues, I'd like to avoid them as well. Mayday!

There's Dropbox.

Email is not secure unless you encrypt it. Even then, it's probably only somewhat more secure. You should never put something in email that you wouldn't want to see on the front page of your newspaper or tweeted to the world. If you only use your Yahoo mail account to transfer HLT data, I don't see how their security matters anyway. Just watch for fake termination notices. They usually end up in the spam folder, but not always. What I like about the Yahoo email web page is that if you put the cursor on the sender, it gives you the actual email address. The script kiddies who send out fake termination notices apparently can't be bothered to spoof their email address.

OK, I got some help from the most unlikely source imaginable, my dear wife, who knows less about computers than anybody I know (which honestly only puts her slightly behind me :P ). She heard my cries of anguish, and came to my rescue, to my amazement, by setting up an icloud email address on my new ipad mini, and tested to confirm that it works by sending me a test email, unlike that wretched gmail account, which I have since deleted. I really underestimated her!

So, I tried transferring my lap info again using the procedure Harry referred me to in the FAQ's, but it isn't coming through. I'm not getting any error messages, and everything looks OK. I tried it a couple of times to make sure I was typing my icloud email address correctly. As I said in an earlier post in this thread, I also tried sending it to my Outlook account, and it didn't make it there, either, so there seems to be something wrong on the send side. And yes, I selected .hlptrl as export format, and disabled all other format buttons. Any idea what's wrong now? Is 100 laps too many to send in one email? Thanks.

Possibly. That's why Dropbox or other file hosting services like YouTube are useful. They don't have the fairly low size limit of emails. The attachment size limit for iCloud email is 20MB, unless you have Mail Drop turned on. If you do, it's 5GB. I just checked the size of the compressed file for four laps with about 700 fixes/lap. It was about 150kB. That would be less than 4MB for 100, but you may have more data/lap.

Not sure if this helps with the troubleshooting, but the several attempts I made to send the laps are all in the ipad's email's outbox, so at least they made it that far.

As far as the size of the file, I'll see if I can figure out how to send a smaller number of laps and see if that goes through. Thanks.
