Comparing my laps to a pro's

Post by Cloud9...68 »

After my last session this past weekend, I had the privilege of letting a professional race driver do a few laps in my car, which I recorded using Laptimer. Is there a way to overlay one of his laps with one of mine so I can directly compare how fast he is going at each moment to me? I read through the "Trainer" document, and I didn't create a new name for my car before letting him drive, so his laps are in the same car as far as Laptimer is concerned as are my laps. Is there a way to go back and overlay one of his laps with one of mine? Thanks.

To compare your own drive to a pro's lap, select it from Lap List first. Select the Reference function from either the bottom of the lap's details (iOS) or the options menu (Android). This will make this lap the reference lap until you switch back to Best or Last again.

Once this is done, you can compare your drive throughout your own laps using all the Data Recordings functions (see Train the Trainer). You can't overlay the pro's data your own videos - timing will be not in sync. In case you have footage available for the pro drive too, and in case you have GrandPrix, LapTimer can add the reference video for comparison:

1) Select the pro's lap as Reference (see above)
2) Make sure the video for the pro drive is available
3) Select one of your own laps, and create an overlay (use Export, Play will not add picture in picture inserts)

GrandPrix will add the reference video in the top right. It will get synced at every sector start. While watching the sector, you will see changes between your line driven and the reference.

I read through the Trainer document again, and I'm not really seeing any instructions as to how to directly compare my laps to the pro's. The document mainly describes the advantages of the ipad's large display over the iphone (I agree - this is why I use an ipad mini to run Laptimer), and how to transfer files from the iphone to the ipad. I've set his best lap as the reference, but am not clear on how to use it as such (I've always wondered what the "reference" designation provides). To tell you the truth, I'm not even quite sure what I'm asking for - mainly, I'm wondering if there's a more efficient way to compare my laps to his than viewing them separately, going back and forth between them, and remembering (or writing down) significant differences in speed, and lineal and lateral acceleration at key points. Being able to somehow view the two laps side-by-side, for example, would be nice. Or somehow being able to lay them on top of each other. Anything to be able to view them simultaneously. Thanks.

Please start reading with chapter "Help users to read their data" and for your question the "Lap2Lap comparison" slide in particular. Btw. you probably look into the wrong document, I'm referencing to the "Train the Trainer Document", not the "Trainer" legacy link on www.gps-laptimer.de/documentation

Well, I just had a big "ah-ha!" moment - I'm probably the last Laptimer user to have figured this out, but I just realized that in the charts that are selectable after tapping once on the image of the track under Data Recording, the red line represents the data (speed, lateral acceleration, lineal acceleration, etc.) for the reference lap, and the white line is the data from the current lap. That's incredibly useful! I wonder what other powerful features I'm not aware of. Oh, well, now I know, and I can really tell where I have opportunities to improve my driving. This really is an incredible app - thanks for all you hard work maintaining it. I will take a private lesson with the same guy who drove my car this past Saturday, and having the comparative data available from HLT will help tremendously in diagnosing and troubleshooting my driving.

There are tons of functions included and no one will ever know about all. So you will run into "easter eggs" from time to time - which should be a nice experience. :-)
