It worked! I was able to overlay the video and data from one of my laps from my July 9 session, and was able to play back a beautiful quality video on my ipad with the data shown within the video. Thanks for your patience guiding me through the process. Nothing difficult about it, just unfamiliar territory for me.
A couple of follow-up questions. I know this is covered many places, including in the documentation, but how would I post the overlaid videos I generate on youtube? Also, is there a way to make the video cover the full screen of the ipad? In other words, is there a way to hide the TAGS, DATES, and VEHICLES information on the left side of the screen, and have the video cover the entire screen?
Finally, do you envision a day where the overlay procedure with a GoPro video could be done locally on an iPad mini, or even an iPhone, rather than having to do it through iTunes on a separate computer? Ipads are available with a lot of storage these days, so I would think an ipad dedicated to Lap Timer use would have the capacity to do everything that a separate computer is currently required for. Thanks.

Re: File export format question
Overlaid videos are stored in the Photo app and can be viewed and distributed to youtube from here.
Direct transfer of videos from HERO4 cams to LapTimer is actually supported already. If working, it replaces the transfer and re-linking you have done manually.
The problem with this feature is it take kind of forever to download it using WiFi and the transport is flaky too. For very small videos it is fine, but I hardly ever use it for videos longer than a few minutes. I hope technology stabilizes over time.

Re: File export format question
Thanks for the suggestion to look in the Photo app; when I play the video from there, it displays in full screen mode, and again the quality is excellent. And I successfully uploaded it to youtube as well, so I'm very happy with the result.
As far as doing all of this locally on the ipad, I see how using wifi would take an eternity, but wouldn't it be possible to transfer the video to the ipad using either a Lightning to USB adapter, or with a USB SD card reaader, then going through the same steps of using iTunes as a means to link the video and the data, all on the ipad?

Re: File export format question
Would it be possible to download the video from the GoPro to the iPad mini with this:
http://www.apple.com/shop/product/MJYT2 ... r?fnode=91
then use the iTunes app on the iPad to copy the video into Laptimer? I'm sure the answer is no, otherwise yo would have recommended it, but is something like this a possibility on the horizon? Thanks.

Re: File export format question
I have never used it, but to my knowledge media read is going to the Photo app library. LapTimer can access the Photo library, so you can relink the lap to this video once transferred and overlay it. iTunes will not be required (neither on iPhone, nor desktop).

Re: File export format question
That's great news! So assuming the video gets transferred to the Photo App on the iPad, I should be able to open up a lap from the session during which the video was recorded, and after clicking on the icon of the video camera within the lap, the "re-link" option should appear within the Video Details screen that pops up, all without having to go through iTunes on a remote computer? So my dream of downloading the GoPro video directly to the ipad, and syncing the data and video and playing the laps back right at the track is a possibility. If this is correct, this really is an incredibly powerful tool for improving one's driving, because it provides the opportunity to compare my laps directly with those of a more experienced driver (after handing him the keys to my car and making a recording of his laps), right there at the track..
Since this potential bombshell (maybe I'm getting a little carried away...
) has gotten buried in this somehat obscure-sounding thread, would you mind if I started a new thread asking whether anybody in this forum has actually used this method, since you had indicated that you haven't personally done it? Thanks.

Re: File export format question
Yes, that's the expected way it works.
Feel free to open the thread in Using LapTimer.
