Hey Harry / et al -
I did some racing today, but because the track was in a non-standard configuration, the app didn't recognize when to start/stop a lap (nor did I expect it to do that somehow magically). So instead a couple times I just used the manual start feature to start the video and data recording. I got two videos I care about, one is 17:00.21 and the other 4:43.93.
I wanted to make a copy of the videos before overlaying the data on them, so I transferred them to the camera roll (iOS) and copied them off the phone. Now I'd like to overlay the data on them, but here I'm lost. I don't see any lap data in the lap list that corresponds to those two video durations above, which I think makes sense because they were never thought of as laps, I guess, just raw recordings. Do where is the data that was recorded along with the videos, and how do I overlay it on the two vids that are now in the Camera Roll? (I read the docs a few times over but still came up clueless, sorry...)
Any help is appreciated!
Mike
Video problem - moving videos and overlaying data
Re: Video problem - moving videos and overlaying data
So start with data - without, there will be no overlay. When starting a recording manually, laps are created in Lap List. Other than for automatic recordings, these are stored into the track currently selected. So please scan through the full list - starting with Unspecified. Important: when recording manually, LapTimer goes into so called "mixed" mode. Once you hit a trigger, it will stop the manual lap and start an automatic one. Video will continue recording. So in case you had a track set loaded, this may have taken over. In worst case, you finished this recording using Cancel - which stops video but purges the last lap recordings (considered the cool down lap).
That's just to explain what to look for. It can get complicated and is hard to analyze after the fact. So please start with the full scan and let me know.

Re: Video problem - moving videos and overlaying data
Thanks Harry. Here's what I've found so far... the two images are of my Laps section, with anything listed as "Unspecified", and anything recorded at Pocono Raceway, respectively. (I know all the other laps in the section are from another track day.) Note that my instructor didn't always start the recording right at the beginning of the sessions...
Unspecified:

Pocono: (top 2 were just me getting set up, ignore them, only 9 seconds long each)

As far as I can tell, I was on the track during these four times... (EDT time zone)
9:20AM - 9:45
11:00AM - 11:30
1:50PM - 2:15 ***
3:20PM - 3:45 ***
Now that I'm thinking of it the way you suggested, I have a video, the larger one (17 minutes) that seems to match with my third session, it's timestamped 1:57pm. The second video is shorter (5 minutes) but is from 3:27pm, so the fourth session above.
So would someone please help me understand how to tie the recorded lap data to the two videos on my Camera Roll? This is where I get confused...
Thanks! (Let me know if I can provide any more info...)

Re: Video problem - moving videos and overlaying data
Assigning a video is done by selecting a lap from Lap List, pressing Edit and New Video in the Video Section.
This however will not help, the four laps are no laps but some recording fragments and have no valid data (short and GPS positions). I'm curious about the statement your instructors didn't always start recording at the beginning... As long as a track set is loaded and GPS reception is good, neither the driver nor the instructor should do anything with LapTimer. It works automatically according to the current position and position information included in the track set loaded.
You need to check your GPS reception please. I assume there is some issue with the mounting position or a metal coated windscreen.

Re: Video problem - moving videos and overlaying data
Thanks for the response Harry.
The track that I downloaded for the day, Pocono Southeast Counter-Clockwise was not exactly the course that we actually ran. Most of it overlapped, including much of the straightaways, but the course through the infield of the track varied from the downloaded map, so I'm guessing that I didn't hit some of the GPS points that HLT was expecting. I haven't figured out how to easily look at the track shape downloaded by HLT to compare it with the actual course we ran. In the end, I stuck my iPhone in the windshield and set it for manual recording, because it was not auto-starting as I ran the course.
I'd love to figure out how to get any kind of data out, but it sounds like that might not be possible. (I do have the video at least, but would have been great to overlay the data on it.)

Re: Video problem - moving videos and overlaying data
This is probably all more difficult than my simple brain can handle, but here's where my confusion really lies:
- I started HLT manually and HLT recorded a great 17-minute video of one of my runs, and a 5m video of another
- I had a Kiwi III OBD Bluetooth sensor connected, so I would think it has recorded at least the car engine data
- I would think the iPhone would have collected its own GPS data as well, but that doesn't seem to be the case...
Is it possible to use at least the OBD data for a partial overlay?
Thanks,
Mike

Re: Video problem - moving videos and overlaying data
In case you have a long manual recording, laps can be derived from this. However, I see just a 8, 9, 10 and 1 second long recording in the screenshot.Mick_NYC wrote:Thanks for the response Harry.

Re: Video problem - moving videos and overlaying data
In case you start a manual recording and get a video, but no data, this means you had no GPS reception. OBD data will be displayed independent from GPS in real time, but it is not stored in case you miss GPS. Any recording LapTimer stores is around the GPS stream - which seems to be missing.Mick_NYC wrote:This is probably all more difficult than my simple brain can handle, but here's where my confusion really lies:
