iphone orientation probolems

This weekend, autocrossing, both days my i phone 5+ would orientate upside down when I first start up the app getting ready to go to grid.
i tired closing the app several times and finally it will orientate correctly. it will start out in the correct orientation when im on the home screen, some times the race screen would be 90 degrees out or correct, then the timer or speedo screens would be 180 degrees out. Im not sure whats going on.

also today lap timer didnt do any video recording, not sure why. a real bummer because it was raining and would have been some good footage! . i usually push speedo then push video. today i didnt push video because i was in grid and the window opened telling me to progress to the start blocking my ability to push video. also had to deal with the orientation problem. So is it simply i have to push video to have video recording and if so how can i press it if the proceed to start window is open?

Orientation is locked while driving. So if for example you change the mount while moving already (or move the phone from the driver's seat into the mount etc), LapTimer will keep the current orientation. In case you mount your device while standing still, orientation should never change while driving.

To enable video recording, you need to enter Video View at least once (stay there or press Record Auto). Otherwise, LapTimer will run in standard data recording mode. You can see the video status in LapTimer's status gadget (top centered) in all timer views. A red cross means the cam is not engaged. Btw. Speedo is portrait only and is no good choice to do video recording in background (portrait video).

both days i put the phone in the mount then opened the app. when i opened speedo or timer, it would be 90 degrees off orientation then when i put in video mode on saturday it would rotate to 180 out. on sunday i was close to the start and when i opened the the speedo it would be 90 degrees out and then proceed to start window would open in the 90 degree orientation so i could even push the video button.
I suspect its a sign of my phone having issues, not lap timer.

if speedo is not a good choice to do video recording, what setting is recommended?

From my point of view, the standard approach is to goto Timer View in landscape. Mount it to landscape while in the pits and select Timer. Next, check health status (status shown in the top - touch the gadget to get details). Verify mounting orientation (tilt/yaw) is as required by checking acceleration is nearly zero. Now, press Video. Check the field of view and select video options as required. Leave Video View by pressing Record Auto. This will bring you back to Timer View with video active in background. Leave the pits and drive with Timer View active.
