Hi all (and Harry!),
I bought the Petrolhead edition yesterday, although this may need upgrading based on the responses to my query.
I run a Caterham 7 with Aeroscreen and want to use my GoPro Hero 3. I have an iPhone with limited memory - 16MB and not much space left.
I'm not interested in PiP, or even in recording video on the iPhone. I want to mechanically mount it somehow to the dashboard so I can glance down and check lap time splits and lap differences. Additional background that is relevant are my driving habits - I normally stay out and focus on doing 15-20 laps per stint, and 4 or 5 stints per day. I am concerned that I will run out of space on a track day - I record at 720P @ 60 FPS and generate 2-3 hours of video. Ideally I want to easily identify my best smaller session (for video editing and YouTube upload), and my overall best lap time of the day (which I guess I can see from the per lap data within Harry app).
So here are my questions:
1. Will he PetrolHead edition cater for this? I don't want multiple cameras, just 1 primary - my Go Pro, forward facing and roll bar mounted. I can get to these settings and change them, but they are grouped under a section in the app that implies GP edition only.
2. I don't have much space on my iPhone. I guess I have to (from reading through many other posts) upload my GoPro video to my iPhone to merge the two layers (GoPro video and dashboard/stats layer). Is there a setting where you can record the overlay with the equivalent of a green screen that can be masked out in iMovie or Camtasia? I was hoping that there would be markers on the 2 streams if the two devices were synced by wifi connecting them. I could then merge on my iMac, and never need to worry about shifting massive video files back onto my small iPhone.
All help appreciated, as I want to get this all working as best I can before my next track day in Sept.
Best regards
Marcus
USing GoPro only, limited space on iPhone and iMovie
Re: USing GoPro only, limited space on iPhone and iMovie
Hi,
When using MultiCam to record HERO footage in sync with lap recordings, you need to record with the internal cam in parallel. You can change res of the internal cam to the minimum, but it will use some space. So pros and cons here and it requires GrandPrix (upgrade). As an alternative, you may consider recording recording with the HERO manually and operate LapTimer as a data only recorder. You can copy over HERO video chucks over later, sync a lap manually, and overlay it then. Take care you set your HERO's time correctly - which is making it easier to sync things later.
Your HERO will break up recordings into 4GB pieces by the way, which is probably in favor of your space restrictions.
On blue boxing, please search the forum. We had some discussions on this and there are solutions around.
One tip: when overlaying a video, LapTimer actually creates a copy of the section overlaid (requiring space). Once it is done, it will copy this new video to the Photo library - requiring additional space again. Turn off LapTimer's access to the Photo library in iOS / Settings / Privacy and the last steps will be skipped.
For everything else (especially file handling topics), please consult the Video Documentation available on www.gps-laptimer.de/documentation

Thanks for the detailed response Harry. I will test in manual mode with synchronised clocks and see where that gets me before upgrading if necessary.
