Looking for simplicity- really basic questions

Post by Puma98 »

Hi - I've been searching the forum and elsewhere for the answers but I'm just getting confused so forgive me for these basic questions.
I use an open car on the track and currently use the following combination - DriftHD with remote mic (mic out of the wind), racechrono screen with qstarz GPS, Dashware (on a PC to link the data with the video) and then iMovie (on a Mac) to edit the final product. To get a nice vid with a data overlay is fiddly and time consuming working across two platforms with several devices.
What I would like to be able to do is to 1. mount my iPhone 5 on the car, record video with data overlay on one go (no syncing later on).
2. Record multiple laps (up to 8) with the data overlay going directly onto the video, and without having to stitch together individual laps.
3. Attach a remote mic to the IPhone out of the wind to record the sound (this is pretty important as good sound makes a good vid)
4. Ideally use the qstarz to get a 10mhz GPS signal but that is not critical - I can live with a slower signal as long as it does not impact on the quality of the video image.

Is the above possible? If so which version of the HLT should I buy?
Thanks

1. No syncing is necessary, LapTimer does it for you. But overlaying is done as an extra step, not in real time.
2. Yes, LapTimer allows overlaying of individual laps and a series recorded in one session.
3. Yes, but the mic/headset connector is special. Check the Accessories / Audio sub forum here for a proven solution.
4. The Qstarz is not compatible with iPhone - you can't connect it. Compatible solutions are listed on http://www.gps-laptimer.de/compatibility/ios

Thanks Harry - appreciate your prompt reply. Since asking this question I have downloaded HLT Petrolhead, and am learning its functionality. I think I might have a very simple hack for sound which I will post after further testing. One question. When I create a new track it gives me a track number, say track 6. If I rename the track the new track data appears on the Lap List. However when I want to use the new track again and go to Load Track/Select track, only official racetracks appear. How do I retrieve and reuse tracks that I have created?
Thanks Alastair

To get a track to the official track list, it needs to be certified. The process is described on www.gps-laptimer.de/documentation following Track.

When renaming the track it should actually not disappear... Can you please try to reproduce this issue and answer with a step by step to allow me to check it?

Steps as requested. Prepare race/new track/rename (changed track 4 name to "Test") - At this point I can start driving and the track is created, but I am not sure where to find a list with the track name "Test" if I want to reload the track. I don't need or want to certify it by the way. I can find it on the Lap List (still called track 4 - user track set), but presumably it is possible to find the track "Test" stored somewhere else so I can select it as I would for a certified track.
Thanks again, Alastair

Tracks defined are shown as User Track Set or Certified Track Set in Lap List. You should see "Test" here by the way - I will try to reproduce that. There is no need to "find" it to use it. All tracks available in Lap List are "active" and LapTimer will make it the active track once you hit any trigger defined.

Tried the renaming... You need to change the track name before defining the start/finish line, otherwise you will get the initial name. This is actually a bug and will be fixed.

For existing tracks, select Lap List, select Tracks in the bottom, and change the name as required.

Have created a 'track' on the streets around my place and it works well. Will use it on a real racetrack in a few days. The iPhone is mounted horizontally (landscape not portrait) and I get a bit of video wobble on the margins of the video (it's not the mounting which is secure). Not sure what is causing it. Also the g force meter registers 1 g on the LHS of the g force gauge even when the car is stationary or going in a straight line. Is this because the iPhone is mounted landscape?

Here's the vid. The data is using the 1hz built in GPS.
