Ducati 848 Evo - no throttle or rpm data recorded from Kiwi

Post by dhevans79 »

I'm using a a Kiwi 2 WiFi module, with an iPhone 5s running the Grand Prix edition.

When I open lap timer, and check the ODB2 connection, I get the following:
IMG_1800.PNG
IMG_1800.PNG (205.41 KiB) Viewed 2748 times
Connected and listening to 192.168.0.10:35000, identifier 'ODBII to RS232 Interpreter', PIDs received: ATZ [860ms], ALLG, PROOF, ATWS [33ms],ATE [25ms], ATBRD, ATL [33ms], ATS [25ms], AT@1 [37ms], ATAT0 [27ms], ATSTFF [30ms] ATSPA0 [30ms], ATRV [34ms]
So it appears that the Kiwi is sending data (although to be honest I don't understand the codes so I don't know what).

When using the video view in Laptimer, I see a throttle and rpm indicator on the left hand side (in motorbike view with the lean angle detector etc), but nothing moves. I'm assuming that at the beginning it doesn't move as it's not recording data, but once I start the lap, I still get no data in real-time or recorded.

Can anyone shed some light on how to make this work?

Otherwise, freaking love the app, thank you SOOOOO much Harry :P

Thanks,

David

Are you sure the Duc implements the OBD II standard and the Kiwi supports it? I'd recommend to ask PLX, they should be able to answer this.

The codes shown in the snapshot are so called AT codes used during initialization. As there is no OBD PID included, there is no communication going on in bus level. So beside checking with PLX you may follow the instructions on "Debugging OBD connections" her on the forum in the Accessories/OBD sub forum.

I saw the previous thread where someone mentioned a duc, so I was hoping that the answer was already known.

I'll pose the question to PLX and post back what I get.

Cheers

Quick Update: I have two support requests open on the Plx website, but no response since the tickets opened 12 days ago :(

Will update if I get anything back.

So I finally got a reply from PLX. See the comments below.

Also, during the time I was waiting for a reply, I was researching myself on how to interface with the Ducati... Bad news...

Apparently the ecu for the duc is locked to not respond to standard odb requests. Thus can be unlocked by flashing a custom rom that disables this protection, or replacing the ecu with an after market one. What this means is that to read the odb data on a "standard" Ducati, you must be able to get hold of an official Ducati diagnostic tool that will provide the correct "licenced" handshake to read the rest of the info.

On a separate email, they mentioned approx 20% of motorbikes support odbii interface. They did not provide the list.

Also, they are unaware of the odbii/can port on the engine itself as illustrated below... But they did take the time to research on forums so half points :)

Plx Kiwi feedback below:

=========================================

Dear David Evans,

Hello David,

Ducati Motorcycle. Kiwi is probably not compliant.

"The only port I know of is the DDA (Ducatihttp://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/icon1.png data analyzer) port and that's not based on any standard that I know of. On most models, the workshop manual says you need the Ducati computer to access it." http://www.ducatimonster.org/forums/tec ... -port.html

You could probably also google your make and model and either "ecu compliant" or "obd compliant" for more information.

Respectfully,

Yes, OBD II compliance is not mandatory for motorcycles. It seems Ducati uses it nevertheless but cripples it to serve their own needs. I don't like this policy neither do I like the way car manufacturers disable additional value by strictly sticking to a minimal set of OBD data. There is so much more drivers could benefit from...
