only one data log and several videos

Post by francis-le-varois »

Hi everybody, Harry,

first of all, many thanks Harry for this great, famous application ! :-)

I've a question and sorry in advance should it have already been asked.

I plan to have a run on "open road" in the next days and I don't want to record video all the time (not enough space on gopro).
so is it possible only to data log and "synchronize" parts of time and then overlay the data log on the recorded videos ?

Would be nice would you have a short desc of the procedure.

Thks.

Not sure I fully understand the video part. In general, you have several options to work with LapTimer:

#1 Use LapTimer for data recording only (see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NS09uYu ... e=youtu.be for a sample)
#2 Use LapTimer for data recording only and record video in parallel (manually) using an action cam
#3 Use LapTimer for data and video recording using the internal cam and optionally an external cam

For all but the first mode, you can overlay videos with LapTimer later. While #2 requires you to copy the video to the phone and manually align laps and video, this part is automated in #3. For more details read http://www.gps-laptimer.com/LapTimerDoc ... hapter.pdf (this document is slightly outdated and is revised and enhanced currently; please give some more time until it gets available).

1 data log and deveral videos

Post by francis-le-varois »

Hello Harry
Thanks for the answer.
Actually I would like to record some videos during the same lap (not consecutive). That means I will have several videos instead only one for a single track.

Is that clearer?

A video overlaid needs to cover a lap, but can cover several laps too. The opposite (one lap is covered by several videos) direction is not possible without joining the section videos using a video editor. So to answer you question: in case you drive 10 laps and record footage for 2, you can overlay this two lap's data to the 2 lap video.

hello harry

that was i was afraid of... :-(
I precise the videos recorded are not consecutives : means if I join the records, there no more sense of the data logged for the joined file...
there is no way to split the data log file ? or inform (as a key in video) that the video nbr one is finishing at one time (indicated by the key), the second one at another, etc... ?

Please re-read what I have written above. I believe you mix up the terms video and lap. A lap is the data recorded by LapTimer for the distance driven from a starting line to a finishing line. It is made up from GPS data, acceleration data, and optional OBD data. A lap or a data recording is no video.

Sample:

Code: Select all

Data Recording for laps 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
1111111111111222222222223333333333334444444444455555555555

Partial video recording covering laps 2 and 3
            VVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVV
In the above sample, you can create an overlaid video from the raw video V plus the data recordings 2 and 3, but certainly not 1, 4, and 5.

For more information, please check the video documentation http://www.gps-laptimer.com/LapTimerDoc ... hapter.pdf An updated version for v19 and Android will follow shortly, but the information included should clarify on your questions. Please check the sections Overlaying and Overlaying Options and Organization in particular.

I I believe I understand.

I've read all the docs and made some tries : I succeeded overlaying some track (only one lap + only one video).
but on your sample you have only one video partially covering laps 2 and 3 ; what the matter with more than one video ? you have to overlay for each video ?

I will study more and go back if needed.

Thanks again for your help.believe I understand.

Overlaying is done by video. So if e.g. you have a second video covering lap 5 only, you need to overlay this lap 5 to the video separately.

hum, yes I understand.

but in case there is only one lap...(and five videos not consecutives - (i.e in a row)).

only one lap means for instance : a long track on open road (3 hours for instance) with recorded videos at some specific times depending of the interest of the event.

sorry to insist, Harry, but I need to understand if it's possible (and if not which method I can use to do that)

And you turn video on and off while driving?

Anyway, to overlay such a "lap", there are two options: in case a video covers the end of the lap, you can align it as usual and get an overlay for this video segment. For all other videos, you need to join them using a video editor and pad them with e.g. black. The padding needs to be precise (at least to the tenth of a second) to not get misaligned data. This means you create one huge video you can overlay your lap to. There is no option with overlay one lap to multiple videos and there is no option to sync a video that doesn't include the end of the lap.

Net-net I'd recommend to go for a bigger SD card :-)
