HLT on iPhone 6 and 6 Plus

Post by devenh »

Harry,

Will the screen layout (particularly the Timer and Speedo views -- or maybe you'll be adding a new incredible view :D ) be the same or different on the new phones? If HLT is going to take advantage of the extra screen real estate, then I may give the 6 plus a more serious look.

I need to test it myself first. I have not yet a good feeling for size and resolution.

Is the GPS accuracy/resolution any better on the IPhone6 vs the IPhone5 ? I am also curious to see if Cinematic video stabilization (http://www.tuaw.com/2014/09/18/cinemati ... ncredible/)will cure the shaky video problem with the older IPhone models when running on a motorcycle. I have tried various mounting devices but the resulting video is still not even close to the stability you get from a GoPro. The engine vibration seems to be the culprit.

GPS has been slightly improved over time with the most noticeable step between 3GS and 4. I have never done a test with all devices side by side, but the 5S delivers higher accuracy than e.g. the 4. Support for GLONASS on top of GPS has been added with the 4S... Update rates will be the same 1 Hz - there is no smartphone on any platform delivering more.

I will test optical stabilization once I get my hands on the 6 Plus. Actually you can't use the usual photography test, recording on track is *very* different.

Thanks for the quick reply. I have done a little research, and I believe both the IPhone 6 and 6+ offer Cinematic Video Stabilization. It is only the IPhone 6+ that includes Digital Image Stabilization, but that is for photo's only, not video.

So, I believe the improved cinematic video stabilization is available in both versions of the IPhone6, and I am hopeful it will smooth out my motorcycle videos with HLT. I have done multiple tests on 2 different race bikes with the IPhone 5 and HLT, and it seems to be the engine vibration that causes the shaky video. When filming with the engine off, it looks good. I have tried various mounting set ups, but none seem to help very much.

I just upgraded to ios 8, and I will see if that makes any difference in quality on my current IPhone 5. Otherwise, one I upgrade to the IPhone 6, I will report back.

Yes, well possible the Cinematic Video Stabilization is what we need on track. Needs to be tested. Digital Image Stabilization is available for the last iPhone generations too, that's not a new item. Optical stabilization is for still images and will not help on track. There is another nice feature that will help on track - continuous autofocus. Autofocus has been continuous for the last generations too, but you could see the process of finding the focus (forward / backward). The new autofocus seems to calculate the best focus before setting the sensor. This means the focus will change if necessary, but it will not "pump". At least in theory :-)
