Here's a picture taken from the triple suction cup mount using the intermediate length arm (~4 inches):

The blue tape marks the center line of the car. The clear plastic on the dash is a Scotch All Weather fastener that I use to mount the XGPS160. I've had no luck with keeping the rubber mat in place without duct tape, which doesn't stick all that well to vinyl either.

Here's a picture of the mount location from outside the car:

The lens is somewhat to the right of the center line of the car with the phone in landscape, but I can't get it closer without moving the mount lower on the windshield. Those little dots around the rear view mirror and across the top of the windshield prevent the suction cups from sticking. I'm driving in an autocross tomorrow. I'll post a video.

OBD data delayed in overlay

Post by Harry »

I got my triple suction cup mount and found the standard arm (from the recommended mount) to be too short to allow a video field if view without cups visible. Ordered a longer one and will test it again.

Driving a different car with an upright windscreen (not exactly a race car :-) ) today, I found the recommended mount to vibrate a lot with the arm horizontally. I had it vertically in my 911 and had no problems with vibration so far. Probably worth another FAQ once I tested the additional solutions... ;-)

@gplracerx, you mentioned an acceleration recorder some time ago - any link? Thx

Harry

Harry,

I've been busy fixing my car. For anyone driving a 2010+ Ford Mustang: If you change struts, be very sure that the bolts holding the spindle to the strut are torqued to the factory spec of 166 ft.lbs. (225 Nm) at least. It's very disconcerting when one of your front wheels falls over in a turn because the spindle casting breaks. Fortunately I wasn't going very fast at the time and didn't hit anything. If you're unlucky enough to have that happen, be sure to replace the lower control arm too. I would say replace the ball joint, but it's a press fit into the control arm and it's probably simpler to pay a little more and just replace the whole assembly. That's what the dealer does.

I have x,y and z axis accelerometer data for a lap around the neighborhood from the single cup mount, but I don't see much point in posting that until I get data from the triple cup mount.
