HLT with Full Nordschleife & GoPros
HLT with Full Nordschleife & GoPros
In June I will be driving the full Nordschleife (no GP circuit) during a Schnelleschwaben track day and I have a several questions related to this configuration that I cannot find answers to.
1) Because we will use the same entry/exit points as Touristenfahten (BTG configuration), on each exit lap we will not reach the start/finish trigger. Is there any way to stop the timer and have it save the partial lap of data for overlaying the last lap of each session?
2) Suppose I select the BTG configuration and then decided to do a flying lap (2 laps total):
A) Will the video (either iPhone or GoPro) stop recording during the gap between Gantry and Bridge?
B) If video does not stop, will it still be possible to bring the video (which would be two BTG laps) into the iPhone and overlay just one BTG lap?
3) Because the maximum file size is 4 GB, the GoPro 3+ Black will only record about 25 minutes in 1080p Wide/Medium/Narrow (and only about 16 minutes in 1080p SuperView) which means I can only get 1-2 laps in a single video file. How does one bring GoPro video back into iPhone for overlay if the lap is split between two different files?
4) Can HLT control 2 GoPro's?
5) Can I use HLT for timing data only (no video) and still control GoPro(s)?
6) If iPhone must record video, is it possible to record low res on iPhone and HD on GoPro(s)?

Re: HLT with Full Nordschleife & GoPros
1)+2) Where do you plan to have the start / finish line?
3) I have not tested this myself, but it should be possible to join the video files to a big video file and process it as usual afterwards. Please use ffmpeg or Handbrake to do this. LapTimer will assume there is only one large raw video file and store sync points for each lap recorded accordingly. Please keep in mind that handling large video files is cumbersome, so less is more in this situation. Please set the GoPro resolution to something the iPhone will be able to handle (e.g. 1080 @ 30fps) and do not select from the resolutions beyond that.
4) You can add additional GoPro videos as picture in picture videos (you need to add them manually), but you can't remote control more than one GoPro at a time. This limitation is due to the fact each GoPro claims its own network instead of sharing one...
5)+6) No, to remote control the GoPro, the internal cam needs to be active. But you can set the video resolution to e.g. SD for the internal cam to not waste to much space. The setting is available in LapTimer -> Settings
Hope that helps. Please check the video doc in addition, it describes how to handle external footage in particular: http://www.gps-laptimer.com/LapTimerDoc ... hapter.pdf

Re: HLT with Full Nordschleife & GoPros
Wow, awesome, thanks for the very fast response.
Followup on #1 & #2:
I had planned to load Nordscheleife Full so I can see my full 'Ring time.

Re: HLT with Full Nordschleife & GoPros
O.k. Nordschleife Full has the Start / Finish set at T13 - the old start / finish. This mean all you need is an additional Stop trigger somewhere on the parking place in the Touristenfahrer area. Please make sure to not have this Stop trigger near the Doettinger Höhe straight as it may finish full laps otherwise. As the cool down laps cannot be compared to NOS Full laps, I suggest to create your own track set "NOS Cooldown" and add the single Stop trigger (e.g. in Kreisverkehr) to this track. This will sort cool down laps into a separate track - which makes sense from my PoV. For information how to define tracks, set your own triggers etc, please check http://www.gps-laptimer.de/Trigger_Logik.html and http://www.gps-laptimer.de/Tracks.html

P.S. You will receive a warning NOS Full and NOS Cooldown are conflicting. You can ignore this warning (as long as the Stop trigger is far enough from the straight).

Re: HLT with Full Nordschleife & GoPros
(Stupid question: I assume NOS = Nordschleife?)
I think I understand. I will have to look into it more next weekend, but basically I am duplicating your NOS Full track and adding one additional stop trigger in the parking area? A couple of additional questions:
1) How far away from the straight should make the extra stop trigger?
2) Do I always load NOS Full for every session and LapTimer will automatically sort full laps into one track set and the cool down laps into the other track set?
3) If I do not add this additional stop trigger, then every cool down lap will not be saved, correct?

Re: HLT with Full Nordschleife & GoPros
Just load the NOrdschleife Full track set once. LapTimer will use it automatically. Do not duplicate the track set but create an empty new one and add this single Stop trigger. The details are in the links posted above.
1) 50 Meters
2) no, load once and keep it
3) yes, these laps need to be finished using Cancel - which purges them

Ah, that makes a lot more sense. Thank you very much.
Re: HLT with Full Nordschleife & GoPros
I finally got a chance to try out your suggestion this weekend. I set up a test course near my house with a Start/Finish trigger and several Split triggers. I also set an extra Stop trigger on a side street about 100m away from the course. I ran 3 lap but on my last lap I turned off onto the side street. The extra Stop trigger worked PERFECTLY! All 3 laps appeared in the Lap List with complete data. Thanks so much for the help!
I do have one related question though. The above solution should work perfectly for any sessions where I drive 2 laps or more. But if I decided to do only one lap and stop (I may have actually convinced my fiancée to take one lap with me
) I would like to use the Nordschleife BTG track set. Since these track sets conflict with each other, how do I switch back and forth between Full and BTG?

Re: HLT with Full Nordschleife & GoPros
To switch to BTG, you load it from the list. To be able to reload your own track set, send it to one of your email accounts you can read on your iPhone. Touching the attachment in the email will load your track set again. To send the mail, use LapTimer's Certify function and replace the Tracks email by your own.
