external GPS sensor

I've used HLT for many years but only using my iPhone for GPS. I'm now looking for a better GPS sensor and I'm wondering if I will have to have both the external sensor AND my phone on my motorcycle or if I can run the external sensor on the bike and then "dump" the data into HLT on my phone after a session.

(If I have to have the phone and external sensor on the bike simultaneously, is there a way to do it through BT or does it have to be wired?)
