Some deeper insight on speeds in laptimer?

A lot of things have changed since the first version of laptimer I purchased some years ago and I'm definitely a big fan and amazed by all new features that have found the way into the app since then. Thanks for your great work and support Harald!

With external GPS, OBD, calculated and measured speed some combinations are possible and I've been wondering (and some other users I talked to too) if there are some recommendations on when to use which configuration.

First I think it would be nice to know, which speed source is displayed in which view at this point. I know there have been changes but I can't sum it up anymore / lost track of it.

The other day I was asked what happens if you log with connected OBD and then decide to turn off OBD data for the video overlay. Does this switch also define which speed values are used for the overlay (OBD vs GPS)?

I remember measured speed causing trouble with higher speeds or fast speed changes for motorbike users and calculated speed was introduced as an option. Personally I noticed with my overlays jumping speed values while using calculated speeds due to partially bad GPS reception. I didn't notice that while using measured speed (but I'm somewhat guessing here). I now have an XGPS150 and was wondering if this changes anything choosing between calculated and measured.

Maybe you can provide a sticky thread with a chart providing all of this information, so users know:
- which view shows which speed depending on accessory (OBD)
- when to use measured / calculated speed also depending on GPS source (internal / external) and vehicle (cars, bikes) etc.

I'm not sure if it is possibly to give such general recommendations but I felt like this might be useful for lots of users. Hope I'm not causing unnecessary work for you.

Hi,

Speed displayed is easy: as long as an OBD is selected, all gadgets showing speed display either a satellite or an engine symbol in the upper right corner. Engine is OBD, satellite is GPS. Two specials: 1) in the speedo view, speed is always marked either as "GPS" or "OBD" (so no icon, but a string). In the video view and overlay speed displayed is OBD if OBD data is available, and GPS otherwise. The later is independent of having the OBD area (bottom right) hidden or not.

Calculated speed can be used for the internal GPS only. I'm not aware external GPSes suffer from the same problem (except that GPS has a certain latency in general).

So it's a lot easier than I thought...feeling somewhat stupid right know and never noticed the small icons.
What about the overlaying question and disabeling OBD for the overlay? Does this have an impact ob the used values for speed?

Oh no, if you want to get serious about understanding all the details, it *IS* complicated...

That's what I meant with "In the video view and overlay speed displayed is OBD if OBD data is available, and GPS otherwise. The later is independent of having the OBD area (bottom right) hidden or not." But I had a quick look in the code and that has not been completely correct. If OBD display is turned off, both the bottom right area is hidden AND speed shown in the left is GPS (instead of OBD).
