I live in Las Vegas and my son karts. I am thinking of using the 3rd Gen Ipod Touch and Dual XGPS 150 in place of a MyChrono unit.
I am thinking of mounting it to the steering wheel with a modified ALUMASKIN iTouch Case. What position is best on a kart?
Has anybody mounted the Dual XGPS 150 to the kart?
I have questions of the Lap Timers capabilities.
What will I be able to track and monitor?
Will I have the ability to build the Las Vegas kart track with GPS data.
View lap times? Can we download the recorded data to PC or Mac and review the numbers on a graph later on?
View lap times on my Iphone or Ipad in real time?
Is there a way to view Tach/RPM's, Engine Temp, MPH
Any other suggestions on using this in karting would be great.

I'm going to try mine tonight for the first time on a kart. Its a rental / concession kart, so I'll use the Tom-Tom mount I have for the car with its suction cup.

You'll get lat and long G, speed, lat and long position, heading, height, and distance as a function of time. It is exportable to excel or any other spreadsheet application on a lap by lap basis. I usually plot speed or G vs. distance to compare laps/drivers/cars.

You can build the track, there is a description of how to do that on the laptimer website. I just put a few points in for PBIR kart track, will see how that goes tonight.

If you have the app on your phone, you can see others lap times. I've done that with a buddy at Homestead.

I don't know how you would get kart data (engine or controls) without setting up a daq with bluetooth. Easy on a car with OBDII, not so easy on a kart.

No idea on the XGPS 150.

Other than the vehicle data, the app doesn't know its in a car or kart so it should work the same as for a lapping day. I wonder a bit about all the vibration on the mount, mine is not very stiff so it may damp some of it out. With shorter laptimes it may help to have a higher data sample rate than the ~1Hz I get from the TomTom though.

In addition to Matt's response:

As kart tracks are tighter than car tracks good receiving conditions are extremely important to get reasonable timing and let LT pick up triggers flawless. So both the TomTom and the XGPS150 are good options. As the XGPS150 comes with some hook-and-loop tape it should be easily mountable. Furthermore you can store away your device and probably need no extra case for the iPod.
