I run in several groups that forbid visible lap timers. By that they mean that the current lap speed and delta from best laps cannot be visible while driving. However these groups do tend allow GoPro or other video and even data acquisition as long as it collects data that is reviewed after a session.

Do any of you run the following setup?:

-GoPro mounted to either windshield or headrest bars
-external GPS (and optionally OBD)
-phone with HLP in a spot where it isn't visible while driving

My specific concerns are that the phone will likely be flat and thus can it be calibrated to detect motion properly in this position as it wouldn't be mounted in the normal straight-up manner.

For those that are mounting GoPros in cars with roll cages - what is your preferred mounting position and brand of mounting hardware? This type of setup would completely forgo trying to get a Ram Mount to mount the phone itself.

You can use LapTimer in flat position but will not get G-forces recorded. Everything else works. G-forces can be calculated from GPS after the fact too (LapTimer ‣ Analysis ‣ Lap List ‣ any lap ‣ Recalculate ‣ Acceleration), so this might be your option. Just take care the phone is on and LapTimer active when recording like this.

I wish I'd read this the other day. I went thru agony getting a RAM mount installed properly only to find the organization I was running with doesn't allow suction cup mounts, even if tethered. Thinking HLT had to be in a vertical position, either portrait or landscape, I reverted to my previous app, Track Addict, which does work flat when held under a package net to keep it from moving. The only problem is it can't talk to my Kiwi3 and HLT can.

Since all functionality is available, even if it may require later calculation, I will be able to use HLT next time out. Thanks for the info.

I run in similar groups with similar rules. I mounted my GoPro using the adhesive mount to my windshield just beside my rearview mirror. I use the frame mount and when driving the GoPro is actually completely hidden by the mirror. I have a 350Z which is a hatchback so I mount the XGPS 160 in the rear under the hatch where it performs extremely well. For the phone, I have a really good suction mount on the centre console that is behind me and thus out of my field of view. I mount the phone in a straight upright landscape position and set to Internal Cam preset.
