How to free up space on an old 16GB Ipod...

Post by Horstair »

Haven't used Harry's in a while but did while I was in Europe picking up my new GT4 and driving 8 different racetracks. Now I have a these videos sitting in the Ipod memory and can't convert to photos since I only have 117MB!!! left -per the "general usage" in settings. The really weird thing is that I DID move about close to 5GB onto the Icloud to supposedly free up space but my local storage has not changed! So I'm stuck, I have the raw videos from my wonderful Europe trip sitting on my Ipod and no way to get them off??? My total local usage with Harry's videos is 8GB and with 13GB of total Ipod available from the 16GB, I should have about 5GB left to convert one by one. So somehow it counts the icloud storage still as local storage. What am I doing wrong? This is so frustrating. Or maybe, how can one transfer/export raw videos from an Apple device that is nearly maxed out on memory? I tried the Itunes suggestion in one of the FAQ's but once I click on "apps" there's no button for file-sharing....
Tx for any help, Horst.

iCloud is no network drive. It can be used as a network drive, but the default is a synchronization mechanism. iCloud takes care files on clients (like your iPod), the cloud storage and other devices are in sync. There is a mechanism available to "unload" local files. This means only a shadow is remaining locally while the cloud keeps the physical content.

Although LapTimer allows you to unload videos, this is not recommended currently. Since iOS9 (or a late iOS8) video unloaded get inaccessible. I try to get that fixed for LapTimer v20.

So what's the alternative? Use iTunes as proposed and pull the videos to your desktop. The File Sharing area is a bit difficult to find. When opening the window with the list of apps, scroll down. This will reveal another list of apps offering File Sharing. This is the place to move files out and in.

Vielen herzlichen Dank Herr Schlangmann fuer die sehr schnelle Antwort :-) Unfortunately, I just did (before I got your response) figure out the "unload" thing going through your documentation and "fortunately" only picked the raw videos I could "afford" to loose just in case. My question however to you is, since I have OS 6.1.6 (I guess latest on an IPod 4), will I also not get the videos back UNTIL you fix this in v20? Tx, Horst.

iOS6 has not received LapTimer updates for more than a year. v19 requires iOS7.1 or later and it will be the same for v20. Actually I'd need to drop support for 7 already to support variable screen sizes introduced in iOS8 - but I skipped this to v21.

But that's beyond your question... The straight answer is No, any fix will require an updated LapTimer, i.e. v20 and iOS7.1
