Hi all:

I want to be able to download my laps and analyze them on the PC or Mac. I am not sure what software people are using for analyzing their laps and what is compatible with the several formats that HLT spits out.

Could someone please suggest a good, and hopefully cheap or free, analysis package?

Please touch any of the formats in Export and you will get an information text on the program's you can use with them

Hi Harry, I looked at all the formats, and it would appear the only format that applies to racing analysis software is the .VBO RaceLogic format.

However, I downloaded Circuit Tools from RaceLogic for OS X and it says "importing of non-circuit files unsupported, feature planned for future version".

I really just want something where I can compare laps in an overlap like in the analysis section of HLT, except on the laptop.

Any suggestions?

The MacOS version doesn't work for me at all. Which is odd because I am Mac only... Try the Windows version in a virtual environment, it works for me.

Thanks Harry, I got Circuit Tools 2 to work on PC (windows 7). I only wish you had a version of HLT for OS X! Just the analysis part.

BTW, do you support the CAN bus in any way (eg. logging of CAN bus messages)?

LapTimer used several OBD II protocols which support CAN bus interaction. Except some special format extension these protocols abstract from specific car busses. This means LapTimer is mostly unaware of bus protocols like CAN - it simply doesn't need to know.

Harry, sorry to go OT, but what if you have a car where the CAN bus messages are not available at the OBD-II port? For example, I have a BMW 135i and from what I have read, you cannot read the CAN bus from the OBD-II port. When I look at my OBD-II reader, it does not give me readings such as rear right brake pressure, which I know IS available on the CAN bus.

My question is then, if the car does not support CAN on the OBD-II port, then I have to assume there is no other way to get the CAN messages?

RaceLogic has an inductive CAN bus reader that plugs into their module... I wonder how hard it would be to create a bluetooth version?

I'm not deep in this topic but it should be possible to request CAN data through the adapter. The issue usually is you need to have knowledge about the manufacturer's proprietary encoding and sometimes encryption of data. I will probably add some customization support at some time, but this information is available publicly and at least extremely expensive to license.
