I track bikes (2012 GSXR 750 & Ducati 1199) and car (991 GT3) and would like to combine my current Gopro 3+ black with HLT to get data capture overlaid onto video. I've been reading non-stop all w/e but would like to ask specific questions:
1. For the car I guess I would need something like a Kiwi wifi OBDII dongle to get the data or does it need to be hardwired? Is there a difference between OBDII and CAN for HLT?
2. Do you know if there is an equivalent wifi dongle or hard wire for the bikes? How could I pull data for the bikes?
3. Will I need to get software to merge the data and video once captured? I don't want to spend hours trying to merge the info - do you have any recommendations for this?
4. Is there any way you can automatically merge the data "on the run"?
5. I assume I can move my iphone 6 between car and bike - I'd just need to toggle between car and bike icon?
6. Do I have to keep the iphone in the vertical plane for it to work - It would be difficult to read on teh bike if it's required totally upright?

1. If I have HLT my iphone 6 will I need something like a Kiwi wifi OBDII dongle in the car to get capture and send the data?

3. Do you / can you use the same type of dongle to get into the bikes ECU's? The plugs/sockets on the bikes are quite different to the cars? Any recommendations?
4. Is there any way to automatically overlay data onto the video with the above set up or do you have to use software to merge the two? Any recommendations for something thats easy and quick to use?
5. Does the iphone have to be mounted completely vertical? OK in the car but will be difficult to see on the bike?
6. Can I use 1080 set up on the gopro or do I have to down rate it to go with HLT?? What setting should be used?
7. I ride Sonoma raceway in north California a lot (formally Infineion raceway) and I see it's on the list but the bike track is slightly different to the car set-up. If the bike set up is not in do you still just have to stand on the start finish line and set the track? Assume there will be no way points for a track set up in this way?

You need an OBD dongle in case you want to collect engine data. That's an option, not a must like internal / external GPS.
OBD II abstracts from CAN and other bus protocols. CAN based OBD II will be a lot faster than older car bus protocols.
There are direct CAN connects available too, but this is getting very special. Compatible devices are available here: http://www.gps-laptimer.de/compatibility/ios
In case the bike supports OBD II, yes. The problem is OBD II is not mandatory for bikes. This means some will use is, other won't. And some will use it as a basis and add their own incompatible dialects. It is difficult. For racing bikes, you will need to connect to sensors directly. But again, this is getting complex and expensive.
LapTimer overlays data to the video, no additional software required. Check the Video Documentation for details (www.gps-laptimer.de/documentation).
Standard mounting positions (presets) are shown in LapTimer's Quick Reference (in the app). You can use other positions by enabling Individual Calibration. Check the link above for a dedicated paper on Acceleration Calibration.
Both HD (720) and FullHD (1080) are fine. I will add 4K in LapTimer v20.
As long as the bike configuration for Sonera has the same start/finish, you can start with using the standard setup. Please send a mail to Tracks@gps-laptimer.de with as many details on the motorbike configuration (track sections used) as possible. We will add this configuration if necessary.
