internal camera vs external camera?

Post by 13brv3 »

Greetings,

Out of curiosity, how many people are using the internal camera on your phone, vs an external camera like the GoPro? To me, using the internal camera would be ideal, since it's one less device to mount, and the video is already onboard.

Stability of video is always going to be a challenge, but using the RAM mount for my old Droid Maxx phone worked as well as could be expected. I recently ordered (and am returning) a new LG G4 phone, and the video was just horrible. It had more jello than a hospital cafeteria. I fear the newer phone cameras might be worse, since they all have gazillion pixel sensors now. Has anyone had good success with newer Android phone cameras?

Thanks,
Rusty

Most users utilize the internal cam (as most users use the internal GPS). I do not have good number, but I assume > 80%. The problem with new smartphones is not the pixel resolution but the video stabilizers built in. They simply do not work well when the whole field of view is moving.

Motion and vibration will always be a problem, but I would have hoped new phones had better camera performance than my 2 year old phone. I certainly never figured they'd be worse. I guess I'm going to have to pay closer attention to the video performance in any reviews of new phones. Maybe the store will let me do a test drive :-)

Thanks,
Rusty

I use the internal camera on Galaxy GS5. I was surprised at the how good it is. I posted a lap on You-Tube, but YouTube knocks the quality down quite a bit. The video I posted seems equal to the other videos I have found (with Harrys LapTimer). On my Windows computer I had to select "HD" on the bottom corner of You-Tube to get the best quality. (My driving isn't that great though) I tried the YouTube "image stabilization" and that made everything "swim" on screen. Less vibration, but an overall blurry swimming effect, so I backed that out.

All Season Tires on Audi A4 - first time at Brainerd International Raceway since 1991.

Used a Logitech magnetic mount at top of windshield to right of mirror. Very solid, no flex, and the phone never moved on the magnetic mount going over rumble strips all day.
