Unable to detect OBD and GoPro

Post by ltullos »

I have upgraded to Grand Prix version to be able to connect my GoPro Hero 3+ and other devices in prep for a HPDE event next month, but I am unable to connect all of my sensors. My configuration is:

Nexus-7 tablet
OBDLink MX Bluetooth
DUAL XGPS 160 Bluetooth
GoPro Hero 3+ WiFi

So far, the only sensors that are detected are:
Nexus-7 GNSS (Available)
XGPS160-40673F (Connected)
Nexus 7 Accelerometer (Connected)
Nexus 7 Video (Available)

Neither the OBDLink or GoPro are being recognized even though I have verified that:

the OBDLink is connected to the tablet and Torque App is shut down

the GoPro Wi-Fi connection to the tablet is established and no other apps are controlling it. I've also tried to have detected by enabling Multicam setting, selecting Master, and I entered the GoPro password.

Finally, I actually want to have my Nexus 7 camera disconned because the tablet is mounted in my dash so the camera is facing into the car.

I've tried to go through your on-line documentation but I'm unable to resolve these issues, so appreciate your instructions to help me troubleshoot this.

Starting with the MX - have you paired it with the Nexus (Bluetooth) and added it as another BT device to LapTimer's Sensor List? You can check that by changing to Sensor List and selecting All in the top. This should show the MX - even while not connected.

For the HERO I cannot do a lot more than repeat the step by step list for connecting external cams in LapTimer's Video Documentation. With the GoPro's WiFi on and the Nexus connected to it, do you get a small gray dot blinking in the cam icon when entering Video View? It indicates LapTimer is searching for an external cam. The most frequent issue is actually the password which needs to match the current WiFi password exactly. So you may want to double check this.

PS The internal cam is always on currently. It is planed to be changed in the next feature release. Till then, you need to stay in Video View for the Android version. At least switch to SD, this consumes less power and storage.

I want to get my OBD MX BT working first, learning from this and then maybe I can sort out the GoPro connection issue.

I've confirmed that my OBD MX BT is paired with my Nexus-7 tablet and that it shows in the sensor list when I select "all"; however it is not present in the "available" list. It's not clear if I need to enter an initialization code, and if so what code to use. I tried entering the same code that I used to pair it; but that did not seem to work.

Harry, I believe I have followed these instructions and while I was able to see my XGPS160 device was connected properly, the OBDLink MX is still not being connected. Is there some initialization code I need to enter?

At this point, I'm about ready to bail out of trying these devices to my Nexus 7 and instead switch over to the iPhone version. Is there a way I can get a refund for the Android Grand Prix version I purchased or exchange it for the iPhone version?

Switching to iOS means you cannot us the MX any more. It is not certified by Apple and needs to be exchanged with the WiFi version or a completely different OBD BT adapter. Just want to make sure you are aware...

For the current device, if the sensor list looks like above, what happens when you plug in the adapter to your car and start the engine?

Currently, I just see it scanning through the list, but it never tries to connect. I did verify that it is operating with Torque correctly, but I have shut that app down so that it is interfering.

I think one other thing I might try is to just reset all of the setting & clear expert settings just in case I have accidentally ticked something I shouldn't have.

Your support is unbelievably great, and even though I'm having these issues, this is a terrific product! I determined to exhaust every possibility before I give up. Thanks again.

Please make sure the MX is listed in the Engine Sensor section. It should flip to Searching... from time to time. Please try the Insecure BT Connection Expert Setting next. Your phone probably requires this. There are several other things to check, but let's do it step by step.

Ok., I saw it listed under both Gos & engine sensors & deleted the one under GPS. I ticked the insecure BT setting but still no connection
I'm trying to figure out how to capture & send log now
