Disable iPhone video and use GoPro only?

Post by zookie »

I'm going to be driving an open wheel car in a few days and my iPhone will likely be in my pocket or strapped to my upper arm or leg. It will not be mounted anywhere that the camera will be of any use. So for all intents I do not need the camera on the iPhone.

I will have a VBOX Sport for data and a GoPro 4 Silver for video.

Is it possible to have HLT not use the iPhone camera at all and instead only use the GoPro?

I did some searching and I'm trying to get my head wrapped around all the really cool functionality in this app but I haven't seen these types of settings yet.

Thanks!

Disable iPhone video and use GoPro only?

As long as you remote control the HERO using LapTimer, the internal cam will be on by default. That's a frequent request, but not yet available. Two options: 1) set the internal cam to SD quality so you do not use up relevant space and delete the video once you are back. 2) use LapTimer in standard (non video) mode and start the HERO manually before leaving the pits. You can move over footage and link it to laps manually later.

Please do not wear LapTimer in a pocket. While it is possible with an external GPS attached, you may touch the screen accidentally and screw up LapTimer operation completely.

Why not import the .vbo file from the VBox Sport's memory card afterwards and not even carry the iPhone? If the iPhone isn't solidly mounted to the car, acceleration data would have to be calculated from GPS fixes anyway. You'd need a laptop to extract the data and attach it to an email or something to get it in the iPhone.

Thanks for the replies.

gplracerx, that's not a bad idea. I haven't had HLT out in any real test yet so I'm flying a little blind here just reading docs and watching videos. I was thinking I had to have HLT collecting some type of data but the iPhone will not be mounted so if the data has to come from GPS anyway and I don't have to take the iPhone out at all that would be even better! I didn't realize HLT could import the .vbo file.

It would make things MUCH more simple if I didn't have to worry about HLT being connected to the VBOX and the GoPro etc etc and I am going to have a laptop with me at the track with enough storage to offload the GoPro videos. There is no CAN/OBD data that I know of so this just might work. I'm glad you suggested this option. Thanks!

Here's a good example of somebody using a professional VBOX i3 mounted in the car, a Gopro mounted to the helmet and then using the raw material to make an overlayed video with an iPHone and HLT App (starts around 2:12):

I guess if you can afford to race a McLaren, you can afford an i3. I presume it had the IMU accessory too.

I've done some poking around but I'm not seeing the best way to import my .vbo and video file into HLT. Since I won't be taking my iPhone with me in the car there is no Lap in HLT. I have iBrowse on my computer so I can copy any files I need to into HLT. When I look I see Documents, Library, StoreKit, and tmp folders within the HLT app on my iPhone. I see the Transfer option under Lap List but what I'm trying to do doesn't fit under that part.

It looks like maybe I take my GoPro video and put it into the Photos app. Assuming that is true it's importing the .vbo and having HLT see both to put them together that I'm missing.

Any pointers here or link (if there is documentation/write-up) on what I should be trying to do to get this info into HLT?

LapTimer's standard scheme is to open files when they are selected in Mail or Dropbox etc. So send the .vbo file by mail to your iPhone and touch the attachment from within Mail. Make sure you have loaded the track's set from Add-ons before doing this. LapTimer will interpret the vbo file as a loggers output, pipe the data through it's trigger mechanism and will add laps to the list just like they are when processing real time data.

To transfer videos, the easiest way is indeed to copy the .mp4 / .mov files into LapTimer's Documents folder.
