From time-to-time, I think I finally set-up HLT GP correctly on my IPhone and then it stops recording during a track session. Just to confirm:
1. Has to be running in foreground
2. On the IPhone - pull up IPhone menu screen by swiping the bottom of the screen
1) turn on airplane mode
2) turn on do no disturb
3) turn on Bluetooth (if you are using multicam or OBD) Even with #1 & #2 you can still put BT on
4) turn on WiFi (if you are using GoPro or OBD) Even with #1 & #2 you can still put BT on
3. Go to Notification Center and turn off all items ( to avoid pop-up messages and banners that stop HLT)

Can you confirm I am on right path and if there any other items to turn off on the iPhone to insure an uninterrupted session.

Turning on/off individual connection types can be done, but is not recommended in general. Turning on Airplane mode in particular turns off the internal GPS. In case you have no external GPS attached, this will disable LapTimer operation. Although the amount of notifications to the end user is reduced by "do not disturb", it may still disturb the app. So I'd not fiddle around with this. So I would recommend to do it the other way around:

One time action: goto iOS ‣ Settings ‣ Notifications; exchange any notification listed in the "Include" list with alert style "Alert" to "Banner". Other than alerts, banners do not disturb apps, so you can keep them.

Every time you go on track:
1) Make sure everything is ON
2) Forward any incoming calls to your mailbox: iOS ‣ Settings ‣ Phone ‣ Calls/Call Forwarding; the number to be entered depends on your provider

I do have an external GPS. am I correct in saying, if I put the phone in airplane mode this will do the same as forwarding the phone to call waiting.

Airplane mode turns off BT, mobile data and calls, Wifi, location service. Please check my recommendation above. Tweaking this parameters is fine if you know exactly what is going on on OS level but will introduce lots of error sources too.
