Hi everyone, new user of this great app(petrol head edition) for my iPhone 5.

A few questions:

-Does this app have all the telemetry needed for analysis such as throttle and braking? Basically I want to record videos and analyze them later of where I made my mistakes.
-I bought a ram mount, what is the best way to mount the iphone?
-Do I need a separate GPS unit to connect to my iphone? if so which is the most cost effective one?
-Do I need a Vbox or something similar to run alongside this app?
-Can the Laptimer be used with the HdHero go pro(no wifi)?
-do I need cellular service to use this app?
-How to backup the videos on the go, usually my iphone is full of memory?

Hi,

Yes, this type of telemetry is recorded for later analysis - provided you add an OBD dongle.
Mount the RAM mount with the suction cup in the top center of the screen and let the arm extent vertically - down. This will reduce vibration most.
Especially if you want to analyze data recordings (and not just measure lap times), an external GPS is recommended. Check http://www.gps-laptimer.de/Compatibility.html or http://www.gps-laptimer.de/Compatibility_Android.html for the details and recommendations.
LapTimer is a complete system on its own. Adding external GPS and OBD sensors make it more powerful than any dedicated solution. Nothing else is required as long as you are fine with using a smartphone in your car and do not need built in components.
LapTimer can remote control a HERO (GrandPrix edition) or use and overlay footage recorded by a HERO (Petrolhead). Check http://www.gps-laptimer.com/LapTimerDoc ... hapter.pdf for the details.
Buy a new iPhone In case you have a laptop with you, you can use iBrowse to copy footage from LapTimer's Documents folder and move it back later. It is not super convenient when on track.

-Basically for vehicle data such as throttle and braking I need the OBD II dongles which do not have GPS, and will have to rely on the iPhone's built in GPS.
-For real time speed and vehicle positioning I will need a GPS which does not use the OBD II port, such as the Dual xgps160.
-Is the Vbox the only one that has vehicle data and gps positioning? This also might not be the case as I don't see a OBDII port plug.

Sorry for all the questions, just a little confused!

VBOX Sport is GPS only and has no OBDII functionality whatsoever. As far as I know, there is no such device available and probably never will...would be hard to plug something to the cars port and still have a free view to the sky for GPS...maybe with a lot of wiring

The problem being that you have to write your own software and the display provided is somewhat primitive. Still, it will log not only GPS and OBD and 3 axis accelerometer, but also a three axis gyro. I suspect that you could attach a three axis magnetometer as well.

Purpose built data loggers like Race-Keeper can be attached to the OBDII port as well as pretty much anything else you want to monitor. I've even seen add on packages to measure suspension movement at each wheel, handy for shock tuning. But you'll pay thousands of dollars for the basic package. You can also spend many kilobucks on much more precise GPS, for example from RaceLogic, i.e. 2cm accuracy instead of 2m. But the base station alone is many thousands of dollars and it's probably overkill for racing.
