For the life of me I cannot work out how to change views. I am running petrolhead edition on a android. I dont see any menu option on the bottom of the timer issue. Am i doing something wrong here or is it the phone?

In any of the top level views (like the initial guide view), you should see an options menu button in the top right. In case it is not visible, please just press the options key. This will reveal the whole list of other top level views.

The drop down menu only offers me the choice of Timer, no other views. This must be just user error. I am getting the same on the IPAD

For the iPad / iOS a tab bar is used to navigate between top level views. In Android, the options menu is used:

Thanks Harry, so I am able to get to that stage and I then select Timer. Then there is no option to change to classic. I am seriously missing something here

There is no Classic view in Android. But once you are in Timer and press the Options menu again, you will get the same list of top level views again to change to.

In case it is all about you are searching for some views available in iOS but not Android, please check http://www.gps-laptimer.com/ScreenFlow.pdf for a view overview on both platforms. When you said "offers me the choice of Timer, no other views", you probably sent me into a wrong direction ;-)

It is planned to make the same views available for both platforms and orientations over time. Some views (like Speedo) will find their way into the Android version, while others (like Racer's) will be removed as there are better alternatives around.
