Harry's data overlay to GoPro Video?

Noticed an update today and within same a mention of Grad Prix Edition and GoPro so decided to update and upgrade to the latest and best.

I anticipated that Harry's would now "push" data to the GoPro camera. I've paired my Harry's app with my GoPro. When I simulate some video recording on Harry's it automatically starts the GoPro but I can't figure out how or even if it is actually possible to get the data overlay on the GoPro video.

I actually don't realy want to use my phone for video, would rather just have my time displayed but what I would like to do is have Harry's control the start stop of my GoPro camera and feed the data into the image recored by the GoPro. Is this possible and if so is there a tutorial for how to achieve this?

Thanks!

Hi,

As the overall topic is a little complex, we have created a full documentation on video handling provided by LapTimer. Please follow the link below and search for "Experimental Support for GoPro HERO":

Thanks Harry. I guess the short answer to my desire is No, it's not possible.

That's a shame. It really would be excellent to be able to overlay the Harry's data to the GoPro video while "on the fly". That for me would be an excellent prospect. I find that using the phone for shooting the video is not ideal, the quality and focal range just isn't there for entertaining quality video. The prospect of moving my GoPro files to my phone for processing simply isn't a runner for me. Far too complex, slow and frustrating.

I note your comments about GoPro not making this easy and I guess maybe they have their own desire to develop something along these lines themselves. It really would be a nice feature to be able to "push" a data overlay up to the camera over WiFi while the camera is actually recording so that the finished article is automatically "in the can".

Anyway, keep up the good work, I'm happy to support your continued endeavors and do not resent the upgrade price for what is actually quite a disappointment.

Best regards.

There are several technical limitation that make this kind of operation impossible (currently): a) the GoPro is a pretty closed system - hope that will change in the future b) given the current processing power available, realtime overlays are not possible - at least at high resolutions and with the richness LapTimer overlays offer.

I plan to offer background recording in v18. This means you will be able to use any timer view to drive, but have both the GoPro and the internal cam recording in background. Any cam will be optional here - including the internal cam. Finally, I plan to offer a "blue box" overlay generating an overlay that can be combined to any external footage (using some video editor). It will not be necessary to have a video to generate these blue box overlays. Please check the link below for the idea.

Hope that will be a good pitch for the vision you outlined.

Yes, this sounds like progress.

However, absolute simplicity is the key to success.

Your passenger looks like she likes speed and Gs! :D

I agree and I'm sure it'll be here soon. But in the meantime, the procedure isn't too hard. Just depends on how badly you want the overlay. Here's my procedure and comments appreciated as I'd like to streamline it if possible.

1. Copy GoPro file to my Mac.
2. Download CineForm Studio fro GoPro and convert .MP4 file to .mov so that it can be edited.
3. Open iMovie and import the .mov file. This took about 10 min on my MBP.
4. Highlight and copy the lap as a new 'project' so that the end is just past the finish line as this will make the sync step in HLT very easy.
5. Export movie in iPhone format to iTunes movie folder.
6. Sync movies to the iPhone using iTunes. The new movie should show up in a folder with the same name as the folder on your mac.
7. Open HLT, tap the lap, tap edit and add & sync the video. I used the GoPro video as the master and the iPhone video as the pic in pic.
