Hi Harry,
Is it possible to see the timer mode whilst video is recording? I have no interest in seeing the video while racing, but I do want to see my lap status.
Thanks.

It seems that I've got everything ready for my maiden voyage with HLT, but I have one discrepancy with the video I referenced in my first post. Here's where things stand with my setup (hopefully spelling out the steps, while very mundane for experienced users, will help other first-timers):

1. I've connected my Hero4 and Dual XGPS160 to my ipad mini's bluetooth network
2. I've turned on the wifi on my Hero4, confirmed with the blinking blue light
3. I open the HLT Grand Prix edition app, by selecting "Race", then "Timer", but unlike in the video, doing so doesn't automatically turn on the Hero4. When I press the "Video" button at the lower left-hand corner of the screen, I get a circular button in the center of the screen labeled "Record Auto", and when I press it, it brings up a message saying that video will start recording automatically when I pass the start/finish line (I've already loaded my track into HLT), but the fact that my camera isn't on causes me to doubt that. What step am I missing that is preventing HLT from turning the camera on? And I assume HLT will automatically utilize my XGPS160 rather than the ipad's built-in GPS, or is there anything I have to do within the app to ensure this?

Sorry for all the newbie questions, but we all have to start at the beginning, right?

To verify the HERO is actually connected and will work, you need to get a picture in picture placeholder in the top right of the screen. One difference between the H4 and the H3 shown in the video is it can't be turned on using WiFi. So please always turn the cam on yourself (WiFi + Cam). Make sure the pad is connected to the HERO's WiFi and make sure you have MultiCam turned on in LapTimer's Settings (and selected the correct cam type). I strongly recommend to read the Video Documentation available from www.gps-laptimer.de because it lists some more cam specific tweaks.

To verify LapTimer uses the XGPS, select either the GPS View or the Sensor List.

Touching the top of the screen in timer mode brings up an information overlay that, among other things, tells what GPS is being used. You don't have to go to Sensor List or the GPS page.

I think I'm finally ready to go. It took about an hour on the phone with a technical support rep from Gopro, so it's a very long story, but a picture of a Hero4 now appears in the upper right-hand corner of the screen when I select "Video" button within Timer, so after a lot of effort (Harry isn't kidding when he says in his documentation that connecting the Hero4 can be tricky!), the Hero4 appears to be recognized as the default camera in HLT . In the center of the screen is a message that says video recording will start automatically when the start/finish line is crossed. Anything else I need to do before my maiden voyage? Thanks.

Load a track in case you haven't and follow the mounting instructions from illustrations #3 and 4 in LapTimer's Quick Reference. Keep my fingers cross :-)

I did my first track session with HLT last Saturday, but have been embroiled in a crisis at work, so I haven't had time to report back until now. Unfortunately, the video recording with my Hero4 was a miserable failure. Here's what I did: When I got to the track, I made sure the track selection was loaded. After confirming the camera was turned on, I opened the Gopro app on my ipad mini to make sure that was functioning. Check - I was able to turn on my Hero4 using the app, which indicates the wireless communication between the ipad and the Gopro was working correctly. Then I went into HLT, selected Race, and pressed the Video button, and got the reassuring image of a Hero4 in the upper right hand corner of the screen, and also got the message in the center of the screen saying the video would start when I crossed the start/finish line. But it didn't work - the only video I got from my session was a close-up of my car's dash, obviously taken with my ipad's camera. So, HLT is still not recognizing the Hero4 as the video recording device of choice, despite the indication of the Hero4 icon on the app's video screen. Any idea what I should try next time?

The lap timer app itself appears to have worked, as I got a record of 22 laps, which seems about right. It also acknowledged my XGPS160's 10 Hz data collection frequency. I need to read the documentation as to how do do the analysis of my laps, but I'm running on fumes, and really need to get some sleep, so that will have to wait until (hopefully) the weekend. Any guidance as to which document describes how to bring up the graphics showing my speed throughout my laps would be apreciated. Even if I can't ge the video working right away, I'm very anxious to see where I have opportunities to go faster. Thanks.

On analysis, please check the Train the Trainer document available on www.gps-laptimer.de/documentation.

On video: with to current version you will always get a video recorded with the internal cam. This at least confirms LT triggered video. For the HERO4 I assume there has been a connection issue. Displaying the HERO4 means it is connect. It should show a blinking LED once recording starts. Once the placeholder disappears it is disconnected. Please make sure you kill the GoPro app before using LapTimer. Otherwise you can get conflicts as both apps try to control the device. Finally, please make sure you have the latest GoPro firmware installed.

Ah, I did not turn off the Gopro app before using LapTimer - hopefully that was the problem. I'll make sure to do that next time. And I'll take your advice and set up a dummy track in my neighborhood to troubleshoot things - much better that trying to do this at the track. Thanks.
