iOS update on iPhone 4: saves app data?

Post by Matt Gent »

I've been on 4.0.1 since buying my phone.

I have track data and video, would like to overlay but since my iOS is too old I don't have the overlay button.

When I udpate the iOS, will it save all my track data? I have transferred my purchased apps/songs, and manually saved my pics & video.

When I first clicked to update it warned me I would lose purchased apps, which makes me concerned about the data I've saved.

Thanks
Matt

Hi,

Usually - and if everything is working fine - you will not lose any app data or apps during iOS updates. Apple certainly recommends to make sure a backup is in place. Same for me ;-) , please export your lap data to the .hlptrl format (use button in the top left of Lap List, select 'All') before you upgrade. Only thing I can imagine as the cause for the message raised, is you have some apps installed not supported in 4.3.x any more.

Thanks for the quick reply.

I performed a backup, and it seems to have done another backup during the update.

A few interesting things happened:
-the video became dis-associated from the lap, this was easy to fix in the edit menu
-the reported lap time in my lap list changed (shorter by ~0.9s), but the time as shown on the overlay is the same as previous
-no sound is available with the overlayed video. It is still on the video in my album without overlay.

Overall I'm very impressed with this app, particularly for the value. I used the tom-tom mount, and find it marginal. Seemed to be nice quality, and held the phone securely, but did bounce a bit at speed. Not bad, but not great for $90.

One more question - the search function on this forum doesn't work for me. Every search term I use (including "overlay") returns an error for a too popular word.

Regards,
Matt

Further info:
-I deleted the overlayed video from the lap list to try to re-do it with sound.
-I re-added the original video to the lap list, and before I performed the overlay it lost sound. So it seems to be the act of associating the video that causes it to lose sound
-All of my other laps are also disconnected from their respective videos.

If anyone is interested, here is my raw video (no overlay)

It definitely looks more crisp on the phone then after youtube compression.

Hi,

The named time gap of approximately 1s is 'normal' and has been there before. Reason for this is that your iPhone needs some time starting the video recording while timing starts immediately (for sure). The disassociation means that the videos are in a different place / changed their address in the Photo app. This breaks the association between LT and the library. I doubt the videos are changed during iOS migration, why should they? So I think the sound is still there but not played for unknown reason. You may send me a note using the Contact button, I will have a look into your configuration. As the videos (overlayed, not overlayed) are the same in LT and the Photo app, please check them in the Photo app too (play, check sound).

OK, contact sent from phone as requested.

Looking into it a bit more, you are correct, the time has not changed. The video list shows a shorter time than the lap list, which is understandable. I confused the two.

Viewing videos from my album I get sound an all of them, viewing them from within LapTimer after adding video to the lap details, I get no sound on any of them. This is before performing the overlay.

The overlay does work now that I'm on 4.3.5, just no sound.

Hi,

Just to understand you correct:

Raw video in LapTimer -> no sound
Raw video in Photo app -> sound
Overlayed video in LapTimer -> no sound
Overlayed video in Photo app -> sound

?

That is correct.

I hadn't seen that it writes the overlayed video back to the same directory, so that I can watch the overlay with sound through the photo app. It doesn't bother me that I have to go back to the photo app to see it.

When I watch the video through photo app, the volume bar is present. When I then watch it through LapTimer, the volume bar comes up at first, then disappears within ~1s of the video starting. It seems like the video player recognizes there is no audio and shuts it off.

Hi,

The volume bar is present when you have not muted your iPhone (switch in the top left) and when video is not in playback. Please check your mute button and then press into the video to get all controls (forward, backward, position, volume). Please furthermore check if your volume is high, the easiest way to achieve this is by using the hardware buttons.

The funny thing is that the Photo app simply ignores the mute button and plays the volume set.

Think that was the problem, right?

Well now I feel dumb. Sorry for bothering you over a silly mistake!

I have also uploaded an HD video with the overlay:
