Trigger detection settings for autocross? And timer starting as soon as I press staged?

Post by Garage Specialty! »

Are there ideal settings for trigger corridor sizes for autocross? My last event and first time using the timer the laps stopped recording about 25+ feet away from the finish line.

also wondering if the timer and video recordings are supposed to start as soon as I hit “staged” on a standing start. Not sure if I might’ve checked manual timing on by accident.

Do I have to hit “staged” every single time when I get to the starting line?

Using HLT Grand Prix edition on an iPhone 12 Pro with xgps 160.

Corridor size needs to be adjusted to match the conditions / layout of your track. In general, a wide corridor will make trigger detection less picky. In case you have a lot of space and no paths in parallel to the s/f straight, you can use a wider corridor. In case you have not a lot of space or the named paths in parallel to the s/f straight, a corridor too wide may result in mis-detection and laps will be split into several recordings. In this case, you need to make the corridor smaller.

Very important: always set a driving direction for triggers. Otherwise they may fire when you pass the trigger in the opposite direction, e.g. a counter straight. There is no need for a very precise direction setting +- 45 degree is o.k.

All of the above is relevant for stop and go triggers (i.e. those triggered when passed at speed), not for standing go triggers.

Standing go triggers are for standing starts. You goto the position defined. By pressing "Staged" you tell LapTimer, that the next acceleration should trigger a new recording / lap. You need to charge LapTimer every time you stage. Otherwise, going to the position, and adjusting it a bit because the staff tells you to pull forward / backward would trigger a start...

You should see LapTimer start recording a few seconds(!) after you started moving. So there is some latency. LapTimer compensates this using inter- and extrapolation, so the results are precise.

I am still new to this and learning.

What exactly 'staged' means in autocross overlay and when it should be clicked?

Thanks

By pressing Staged, you confirm you are staged for a standing start. This means you stand still and wait for signal to accelerate. There are two types of Autocross starts - either this staged / standing start approach where timing starts when you start accelerating, or a regular start by passing a certain position / line at speed. Just like a s/f line when racing a track.
