Would Auto-Join Notifications Affect GPS Connectivity (RaceBox Mini)?

Post by Dubbedown »

My setup entails a second iPhone (SE 3) that is dedicated for track use and car diagnostics. It comes with a data plan however I have learned to turn on airplane mode when using on track. Additionally, I made sure to forget any other accessories or WiFi connections. The known device list to which it connects automatically are the first 2 items below.
  • I use the original OBDLink MX Wifi (not plus) device as it works well with my older DME and it does not conflict with Bluetooth devices.
  • For GPS, I have tried a few different ones but I am currently using RaceBox Mini. It consistently reads 10hz in the sensory list screen.
  • For video, I use a GoPro 4 but it is turned on/off manually, WiFi is disabled. I overlay viseo manually, small price to pay to have everything else work
The issue is that upon reviewing my times, I noticed some of my laps show very low GPS sensor rates (i.e. 1 Hz), versus others that show 25 Hz. What could possibly cause this to happen despite taking all the precautions noted above? The ONLY thing I can think of is that my phone may have had a notification to connect to a nearby hotspot. I know I’ve seen it during the day when off track but it is hard to recall if appeared during a driving session. But would this cause the app to lose its GPS connection if the message wasn’t cleared?

I have now changed my “ask to join” WiFi and “auto-join” Hotspot settings from Notify or Ask to OFF. But I won’t be able to test this again for few weeks and was hoping to get clarity before then.

Two possible causes:
  • I had some reports on 1 Hz recording although a Racebox should have been connected; there has been a known bug in the sensor integration - which should have been fixed a few versions ago; I have released version 24.9.1 two days ago - which has been tested to record at 25 Hz by myself
  • The second one is a drop of connection to the Racebox; this will make LapTimer fall back to the internal 1 Hz sensor

Oddly enough when I go to App Store, it shows my software is Petrolhead. I think it is because I was originally on Petrolhead and subsequently paid upgrade fee a while back. But either way I do not see 24.9.1 available for me.

I am currently on May 2024 build 24.9.0.188 (product Grand Prix edition, version Petrolhead edition).

I just checked the AppStore status. All apps are in “Ready for Distribution” status which actually should go to the stores automatically… I’ll wait a day or two and contact Apple in case they have not resolved the problem at this time.

But you have 24.9.0 - which passed my Racebox tests too.

On Petrolhead / GrandPrix: that’s fine and the way LapTimers upgrades work. Your initial purchase sets the actual app you own. When upgrading to GrandPrix, it is still Petrolhead technically, but has all GrandPrix features enabled.

Ok so if my version has this latest fix then is the drop on RaceBox connection potentially caused by my original question?

Notifications can interrupt an app. LapTimer will disconnect all sensors when inactivated, but reestablishes them once activated again.

Thanks, unfortunately I’m not able to clear away those notification questions while driving. Hopefully changing to these notifications to OFF in system settings does the trick.

Lastly, just for avoidance of doubt do you think this setting in the Racebox app is what might be causing the device to temporarily shut off? I don’t actually have the app running at all but I wonder if this setting reflects the the device’s behavior?

i've had some bizarre behaviors too that i think might be related to this type of auto join notification. i think it has caused the laptimer app to freeze. i have also turned them off but haven't been able to test yet.

I disabled auto join, put the phone in airplane mode, and turned off / unplugged any other BT devices in my car.

Despite all that, I still regularly deal with scenarios where the race box loses connection entirely. I have to say it’s super frustrating and I regret buying the device.

I regret selling my old xgps 150!
