OBD Solution for BMW E36 328i (1998/99)

Post by nikgrove@mac.com »

Hi,

I'm using HLT and very very happy with it but I want to get into the OBD system on the BM.

My understanding is that the year of manufacture 1998/1999 E36 does not have the OBD II system and therefore, I don't think that any of the OBD solutions listed on the website will work.

Can anyone give me any ideas/suggestions/advice on how I might be able to get data out of the car? All I want really is speed, revs and ideally throttle position.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Cheers,

Nik

The above link is outdated and doesn't work any more. Any integration of non-OBD II adapters or adapters not listed on LapTimer's compatibility pages needs to be integrated using our Developer Program. You can read about both the OBD II approach supported, wired solutions (like the above OBD2 4U), and the Developer Program in this document: http://www.gps-laptimer.com/LapTimerDoc ... rogram.pdf

In case you want us to comment on your hardware, please provide a link / adapter model type etc.

Hi,

It doesn't look like the Autocom device supports the ELM327 protocol. This means it needs an integration into LapTimer using our Developer Program. To accomplish this, two things are required:
  • You need to get your hands on Autocom's protocol used to retrieve real time data. I do not see they have something online, so you need to contact them directly. Well possible they keep their proprietary protocol private and do not make it available externally.
  • The adapter needs a custom sensor implementation. This is done using HarrysLua scripting language. Easy to do provided you have some programming skills, impossible otherwise. :-)
In case you, someone else, or Autocom wants to go this path, I'm happy to support.

thanks for your support.

I dont have any idea about programing skills. I think that the best option is buy another OBD that support the ELM327 protocol (OBD2 4U), can you put some link about this product to buy them??

thank you very much Harry.
