No speed available in overlay iPhone 6s

Post by cobbyboy »

I apologize if this has been addressed elsewhere but I searched before posting. This weekend at Road Atlanta I was getting no speed,i.e., "0" on the overlays, although some videos would very briefly show a very inaccurate speed at the beginning of the lap. It appeared that the speed display might be stopping right at the point I hit the start/stop point I had entered. I am sure this is something I did wrong, but I have no idea what that is. Many thanks for your help.

Is this OBD or GPS speed? In case it is the later, you had no GPS reception / there has been a general issue with the hardware. Sometimes it makes sense to restart the phone.

In case you had an OBD attached, the connection dropped. Switch to GPS speed for overlays in this case. The setting is on the second page in Overlay Configuration for iOS and further down on the page for Android. Overlay Configuration is the screen you get when pressing Export (Video).

Thanks as always, Harry. I was just about to post this video, which shows just what you describe, with the GPS cutting out at the start, and then kicking in briefly at about 1:29 later in the lap. Best, Jim

For overlaid video export, LapTimer makes a one time decision to add OBD sourced gauges or not. This is different to the live view, where gauges are added / removed depending on the current OBD status.

For the lap shown, OBD has obviously not been available for the complete lap. LapTimer adds the gauge because there is *some* data, but actually it would be better to remove it completely. Same for speed. As OBD speed is considered "available", GPS speed is not used.

To work around for this video / lap: got Lap List ‣ the lap and revert to the original video first. Next, start a new overlay using Export. Swipe to the second page and tick Use GPS Speed and set OBD to None. This will move the useless gauges and give you GPS speed.

Harry, Sorry to bug you again on this, but still getting no speed on overlay at Road ATl, although average speed is recorded,. No OBD, GPS full strength as mounted. When I tried to use the revert function to correct this as you suggested previously, I find "USe GPS" already set, but showing in faded green as in "grayed out." I know I am doing something wrong, but don't have a clue. Thanks for any advice.

The Use GPS Speed is disabled in case you have no OBD channels available. In this case GPS Speed is used anyway. Please select the lap overlaid and scroll to Data Recordings. Touch the Preview row and select Charts afterwards. This will show you speed data stored. You may want to post a screenshot here.

Harry, I did as you instructed and this is what I got. FWIW, I tested the setup yesterday on the street and it worked fine. Some kind of anomaly with Road ATL, perhaps? Thanks, Jim

As you can see from the diagram there has been no speed recorded. The speed is displayed as zero all the time although position changes and acceleration seems to be fine too. This looks like a problem with the sensor, it probably needed a reset. There are ways to calculate speed from position changes after the fact, but they are not available in the user interface currently.

Thanks, Harry. By "reset" I take you to mean the phone. Correct?
