Apple or Android

Post by EvolutionX »

I am curious what phone is better for the lap timer using an external OBD and GPS?

Also a question for Harry. My friend just got the Gran Prix version for his iPhone 2 weeks ago and then a few days ago traded his iphone in for a droid. Does he have to repay for the app?

Thanks

As for now, only Apple products have hardware acceleration for the video overlays. For me at least, that's a major thing and I guess that's also the main difference between platforms right now. Starting with v20 next spring, hardware acceleration will also be implemented in newer android versions.
Another thing you might consider are additional gadgets like GPS and OBDII. Android based systems will work with almost all available external Bluetooth gadgets, even the not recommended cheap ones.
Apple requires Bluetooth accessories to be Mfi certified and therefore cost more. On the other hand, these accessories are good quality and proven to work. The other option for Apple is BTLE but for the moment I think the only HLT relevant gadget is the Gopoint Kiwi 3.
Your friend will have to buy the App again, being another platform and completely different stores and payment methods. Harry has some partial refund thing going on (infos can be found here somewhere) for users changing platforms. If you ask me, that's almost too kind on his side, since both Apps will keep working on both platforms...so why not pay twice? Seems only fair.

Thank's for the response. Is the hardware acceleration the G Force Meter? I have the BLt1 for the iphone but then I was reading the OBD MX for the Adroid is a lot faster. Since I qualify for trading my phone in I was either thinking iPhone 6s Plus or Galaxy S6 Edge Plus. I am not sure what the "Hardware Acceleration" does and how much of a difference it makes. Is that the only difference?

The only reason I asked about the credit is my friend just got the app two weeks and then decided to change phones so he had to erase the iphone and mail it back.

Thanks for the info

Hardware acceleration is about encoding the video generated by LapTimer (overlaying). The difference is speed is very high. An iPhone 6S will overlay a lap faster the the lap duration (e.g. a 2 minute lap is overlaid in a minute) while without hardware acceleration is will take 20 minutes - even for a fast phone like he S6 Edge. I cannot say yet which Android models will support hardware acceleration in LapTimer v20...

The Android and iOS version have pretty much converged over the last years. There are still some functions and views not available in the Android version, but the differences are minor nowadays.
